As canning season approaches, it's a good idea to get your pressure canner lid tested. Pressure canners with dial gauges should be tested yearly to ensure their calibration is correct - meaning your canner is maintaining proper pressure when in use. Dial gauges that read incorrectly can cause over- or under-processing, resulting in unsafe food.

Extension Green County offers FREE dial gauge canner lid testing for Presto brand canners. To learn more, please call 608-328-9440 or visit: https://green.extension.wisc.edu/families-and-finances/food-preservation/

PEAQ (Predictive Equations for Alfalfa Quality) stick monitoring is in full swing! PEAQ is a method developed by the University of Wisconsin to provide an estimate of the relative feed value of first cutting alfalfa based on crop height and maturity. Our goal is that this information will help forage producers and agronomy professionals track the growth and development of alfalfa in their area so they know when to check their own fields to target their preferred quality while maximizing tonnage.

Throughout the month of May, samples are collected on Mondays and Thursdays, with results posted on our website on Tuesdays and Fridays. To see results, you can visit https://green.extension.wisc.edu/.

Questions about PEAQ? Contact Jordyn Sattler, Crops & Soils Educator, at [email protected].
