FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 13, 2026

Joint Statement from Mayor Friday Ellis and Monroe Police Chief Vic Zordan

The tragic loss of a young life in our community is heartbreaking. On behalf of the City of Monroe and the Monroe Police Department, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and all those affected by this tragedy. “As a father, my heart breaks for this family. No parent should ever have to endure the unimaginable pain of losing a child. A young man with dreams, promise, and a future yet to be written is gone far too soon. Behind this tragedy is a family whose world has been forever changed and a community grieving alongside them.
Right now, they need our love, our prayers. I ask our community to surround them with grace and respect their privacy during this heartbreaking time,” said Monroe Mayor Friday Ellis.

The Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office is leading the ongoing investigation, with assistance from the Monroe Police Department. We recognize the importance of allowing investigators to complete their work and ask the public to avoid speculation or sharing information that has not been officially confirmed.

We also ask our community to respect the privacy of the family, including refraining from publicly identifying the student. In moments like these, our words and actions matter, and we must be mindful of the additional pain that rumors and public commentary can cause.

DON’T BE THE VICTIM OF A SCAM!

Please remember these important tips to help protect yourself from becoming the next victim.

NEVER PROVIDE PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE TELEPHONE

Do not provide personal information to anyone over the phone, no matter who they claim to be.

PROTECT YOUR BANKING INFORMATION

Never provide information about:

Where you bank
Your online banking account
Your account numbers
Your passwords or security codes
YOUR MONEY IS SAFEST AT YOUR BANK

Scammers are convincing victims to withdraw money from their bank accounts under the false promise of making their money “more secure” somewhere else.

DO NOT FALL FOR IT!

Your money is safest at your bank. Never withdraw or transfer money because someone over the telephone tells you to.

NEVER CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD AT SOMEONE ELSE’S REQUEST

If someone calls and tells you that your account has been hacked and asks you to change your password over the telephone—DON’T!

Hang up and contact your bank or the company directly using a trusted phone number.

WHEN IN DOUBT, HANG UP!

Scammers can pretend to be police officers, bank employees, government officials, or other trusted organizations.

Stop. Hang up. Verify. Protect yourself.

DON’T LET A SCAMMER TAKE YOUR MONEY!
