MORPH VIDEO: NOWELL-WHEELER-STALLINGS HOUSE
The Monroe Museum put togehter this MORPH VIDEO:
A couple of weeks ago we morphed the John M. Nowell house at the corner of Broad and Walton Streets. Just across Broad stands today's morph, the Frank Nowell house. John and Frank were first cousins. When you consider that Frank's father Calvin lived where the city hall parking lot is now and Bob Nowell and Eva Nowell Arnold lived one block east on Jackson Street, it is easy to understand why this area was, at one time, known as Nowell Heights.
In 1916 Frank Nowell and his wife, Ada Carithers Nowell, hired architect, M. F. Morris of Atlanta to design a home for their family. Mr. Nash of Good Hope was retained to build it for $3559.00. The home was finished in August 1916. Fifteen months later, in November 1917, Frank Nowell died. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Monroe Board of Education and Vice President of the Farmers' Bank.
Ada Nowell remained in the home and was joined about 1930 by her daughter, Elizabeth and husband, Sid Wheeler, co-owner of Carmichael Drugs. Sid and Elizabeth lived upstairs and paid Ada $10 per month rent while Ada paid the Wheelers $5 per month board.
Chris Stallings purchased the house about 2016 and has restored it beautifully.
Our thanks to Molly Wheeler Barnes, daughter of Sid and Elizabeth, and John Wheeler, their grandson for giving us information and photos for this morph. Steve Brown, Monroe Museum Historian
