The City of Monroe, Michigan

The City of Monroe, Michigan Located in SE Michigan and founded in 1785, Monroe is Michigan’s third oldest community. Welcome to City of Monroe's Official page!

Founded in 1785 and the site of a War of 1812 battlefield, Monroe is a community that has a shared vision that seeks to balance the opportunities of economic development with the stewardship that is required for historic preservation. Monroe is also Michigan’s third oldest community. With a population of nearly 20,733, Monroe is located about 17-miles north of Toledo, Ohio and about 35-miles south

of Detroit. A village in 1817, the City of Monroe was incorporated in 1837 and is also the county seat of Monroe County. Monroe’s location on the west shore of Lake Erie and its River Raisin made it a natural crossroads for food and transportation that attracted the Potawatomi Tribe of Indians who first lived here. Later, French missionaries, fur trappers, and settlers came for the same reasons. Residents and visitors today continue to find Monroe to be a welcoming crossroads of historic and natural treasures. The city is home to the National Register of Historic Places War of 1812 River Raisin Battlefield. Monroe’s natural environment is showcased and preserved by having the 260-acre Eagle Island Marsh unit of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge located in it. And the inland sea of Lake Erie offers boating, swimming, camping, wetlands exploration, hiking, and fishing, at the 1,300-acre Sterling State Park on the shores of Lake Erie. Young artists, it’s time to make your mark! 🎨

In celebration of International Youth Day, we’re looking for aspiring artists, ages 5-18, to take part in City of Monroe’s 2026 “I Voted” Sticker Contest!

Participants are invited to design a sticker that could be worn by Monroe voters this November. In honor of America 250, patriotic designs that show what America means to you are encouraged. Note: Other original designs that follow the guidelines are welcome, too.

Here’s what you need to know:
◾Designs MUST be original and contain ‘I Voted’
◾Artists must live in, or go to school in the City of Monroe to participate
◾Designs should be non-partisan and not reference any political group or issue
◾Only one entry per person will be accepted

The top three designs from each age group (5-9, 10-13, 14-18) will go to a public vote in October and the winners will be turned into official “I Voted” stickers and handed out during Early Voting and on Election Day in November.

✨ Let’s celebrate the power of young voices through art!

200+ volunteers. A few hours. A BIG impact on the River Raisin.

During the 2026 River Raisin Cleanup, the community answered the call to remove trash and debris from the river and along its banks.

In total, volunteers removed:
🗑️ 6 cubic yards of trash
🪵 6 cubic yards of logs
♻️ Several hundred pounds of scrap metal

Everything collected was taken to the City’s DPS yard, where materials were separated for recycling or disposal. Cleanup efforts like this help protect the health of the river and ensure it can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Thank you to all volunteers and sponsors who gave their time and resources to be a part of the legacy! See you next year!

Something colorful is taking shape along the Riverwalk! 🎨

A brand-new mural is coming to life under the Macomb Street Bridge. Local muralist Presley Bergmooser is transforming the space into a vibrant work of art, and this week, campers from the River Raisin Stewardship Camps rolled up their sleeves to help paint alongside her.

Projects like this celebrate our community, create memorable experiences for local kids, and make the Riverwalk an even more welcoming place to explore. We can't wait to see the finished product!

🖌️ This mural is funded through the City's Capital Improvement Program, which includes dedicated funding for public art. The expenditure was approved by City Council at its July 20 meeting.
