Just asked our Council to follow the lead of Governor Josh Stein; hopefully we are able to honor Reverend Jesse Jackson and his contributions to our country in the same way.

Good Afternoon, Council and Manager Watson:

At moments when our community is already reflecting on history, service, and shared values, we are presented with opportunities to lead in ways that are both meaningful and unifying.

I respectfully encourage the City of Monroe to take the lead in honoring the life and legacy of civil rights icon Reverend Jesse Jackson. Specifically, I recommend that we create a City proclamation to be read at Tuesday’s Council meeting, formally observing February 17th in recognition of Reverend Jackson’s enduring contributions to civil rights, equity, and justice.

In addition, I encourage the lowering of City flags to half-staff in alignment with Governor Stein’s directive at the state level.
Together, these actions would represent a thoughtful and visible acknowledgment of Reverend Jackson’s impact while reinforcing Monroe’s commitment to values-driven leadership.

As we continue through a month that recognizes Black history and its lasting influence, this proclamation would serve as a moment of reflection and awareness, highlighting Reverend Jackson’s work and the progress it helped secure for our country.
It would also provide an opportunity for unity and shared recognition within our community.

By Monroe stepping forward in this manner, I am hopeful that other Union County municipalities will be encouraged to follow suit, allowing our region to collectively honor this legacy with intention and respect.

For reference, the article outlining the Governor’s directive is included below:

Thank you for your consideration.
I am looking for a second for this request and I am happy to assist in drafting language for the proclamation if helpful.

Best,
Franco McGee for Monroe City Council

Gov. Josh Stein has ordered U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities lowered to half-staff from Feb. 19 through Feb. 28 to honor Rev. Jesse L. Jackson,

In Monroe, we refuse to let anyone divide us!

Let this be clear: any attempt to pit Republicans and Democrats against one another on this Council is a direct attack on the values that have guided Monroe for generations.

Our Council has never operated through partisan lines — and we will not start now!

We know EXACTLY what the intended impact of HB3 was, and we will not allow that mission to take root here.

OUR RESIDENTS DIDN'T ASK FOR THIS;
OUR COUNCIL DIDN'T ’VOTE FOR THIS

And we will not allow partisanship to derail the COLLABORATIVE, FORWARD-FOCUSED LEADERSHIP that has helped Monroe thrive.

Monroe’s progress has always come from working together — not from political posturing.

We serve EVERY RESIDENT, EVERY NEIGHBORHOOD, EVERY VOICE … NOT a PARTY!

Anyone seeking to run on a PLATFORM of DIVISION or HARD PARTISAN LINES is choosing DISRUPTION over PROGRESS and PERSONAL AGENDA over COMMUNITY.

WE REJECT THAT ENTIRELY!

This Council remains STEADFAST in its commitment to UNITY, SERVICE, and TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP that lifts ALL PEOPLE — regardless of political affiliation.

Monroe deserves nothing less!

ALL COUNCIL, FOR ALL PEOPLE...Always.

Comment: "MONROE FOR ALL PEOPLE" if you approve this measage.

To the Citizens of Monroe:

While I’m away representing Monroe at the National League of Cities Annual Conference, I was made aware of recent messaging from Mayor Burns regarding alleged US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) activity in our city.
I want to be transparent with you all—I was frustrated and deeply concerned by how this information was shared and the panic it has caused in our community.

Leadership requires clarity, coordination, and truth, especially on sensitive matters like federal law enforcement involvement.
That’s why I immediately reached out to my Council colleagues, our City Manager, and Monroe Police leadership to express my concerns and request that we approach this issue together, thoughtfully and responsibly.

Below is the message I sent this morning. I share it openly because our residents deserve calm, factual leadership—not fear, confusion, or political theater.

Monroe is stronger when we lead with unity and discipline, especially in moments like this.

[Council Colleagues, City Manager, and Monroe Police Leadership:

Good morning,

I am writing today deeply disappointed in the recent interview and public messaging broadcast by the Mayor regarding alleged CBP activity in Monroe. His comments have created unnecessary fear, confusion, and damaging rumors—despite the fact that, to my knowledge, we have had no issues involving CBP in our city.

The Charlotte Observer article notes that “surrounding counties report no Border Patrol presence today.”

https://amp.charlotteobserver.com/news/local/article312968885.html

Yet the Mayor’s statements suggested otherwise, and further implied that he would support CBP engaging in Monroe. This type of language—spoken without verified information or a collective decision—creates panic rather than clarity.

To be clear:
If CBP assistance were ever truly needed in Monroe, I would support that decision.
However, such a step must be calculated, justified, and executed responsibly—and only after a coordinated discussion and agreement among Council, the City Manager, and MPD leadership. That is how responsible governance works, and anything else bypasses the structure and safeguards we are elected to uphold.

My concerns include:

• Undermining the collective decision-making process:
The Mayor’s messaging gave the impression that unilateral support for CBP operations is acceptable. It is not. These decisions should be deliberate, informed, and made as a unified leadership body.

• Causing unnecessary fear in the community:
Implying active CBP involvement—when surrounding jurisdictions have reported none—has triggered confusion among residents and businesses.

• Political theater instead of responsible leadership:
With the serious issues neighboring cities are facing, Monroe does not need dramatic or speculative statements that distract from real priorities.

• Eroding public trust:
Messaging that lacks verification damages confidence in our leadership and spreads rumors we then have to correct after the fact.

As leaders, we must remain grounded in facts and avoid becoming the source of panic. We should be the calm in the storm—not the cause of it!

Given the impact of the recent messaging, I respectfully ask that we consider the following:

1. Release a unified public clarification stating that, to our knowledge, there is no active CBP operation in Monroe and that any future involvement would follow proper coordination.

2. Reaffirm our established process that decisions involving federal agencies must be discussed collectively by Council, the City Manager, and MPD leadership.

3. Review how the recent interview statements were formed and communicated, ensuring future messaging is fact-based and reflective of our entire leadership team.

4. Refocus our city’s public communications on real local issues rather than speculative scenarios that create unnecessary anxiety.

I remain committed to working alongside each of you to provide steady, responsible leadership for our residents. My frustration is rooted in wanting the City of Monroe to present clear, factual, dependable information—especially on matters as sensitive as federal involvement in local policing.

Thank you for your attention, and I look forward to moving forward together in a unified and responsible manner.

Respectfully,
CM McGee]

“I would not stop them,” Mayor Robert Burns said. “I would welcome them if there happened to be any violent illegal aliens here.”

Honoring Our Veterans Today and Always

Today, I pause with deep gratitude to honor the brave men and women who have served our country—those who stood in defense of our freedoms, values, and the opportunities we hold dear.
Their sacrifice is the foundation upon which we continue to pursue equity, justice, and a better tomorrow for every person who calls this nation home.

As a proud Councilmember for my hometown, I am reminded that patriotism shows up in many forms.
It is seen in the courage of our veterans who risked everything.
And it is also seen in each of us who strive every day to advance fairness, dignity, and unity in our community.
Our veterans teach us that standing together—even when perspectives differ—is necessary for a strong and thriving society.

To all Veterans: THANK YOU!

Thank you for your SERVICE, your SACRIFICE, your RESILIENCE, and your UNWAVERING DEVOTION to protecting LIBERTY and JUSTICE for ALL.

Your example calls us to lead with compassion, to show respect, and to work toward a community where everyone has the opportunity to live freely and thrive.

As we enjoy time with family, friends, and community today, may we reflect on the privilege of those freedoms and recommit to honoring them through our actions.

Let us continue to build a Monroe that UPLIFTS, SUPPORTS, and STRENGTHENS ONE ANOTHER.

Be Patriotic. Be Grateful. Be the Change.

Happy Veterans Day to all who have served and continue to serve.

Boil Water Notice Lifted. All Monroe Water Customers May Resume Normal Use

After final testing confirmed the system was safe and free of contaminants, the Boil Water Notice for all City of Monroe water customers has been lifted.

✅Customers in the West Zone may now resume normal water use.
✅The East Zone was cleared earlier this week and remains fully open.

The original issue was limited to a small, isolated section of the West Zone affecting just nine customers. Out of caution, the State directed the City to issue a systemwide notice. After working closely with DEQ and proving our system was safe, the notice has now been lifted for all customers.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of those affected as City crews worked non-stop to isolate, flush, and verify the system was safe.
