As an update, our 2026 paving season started on Monday, August 10th, and currently Cloverdale Drive, Arcadia Court, Red Oak Court, Oakwood Lane, White Oak Drive, Union Street, Atha Street, and North Hammond Drive are complete.

Patching is currently taking place on Henson Drive and Vine Street, with overlay to follow for completion. Gatewood Drive, Gatewood Way, Brookwood Lane, Applewood Drive, and Ammons Bridge Road will all see patching to follow as well.

Permanent striping will be completed in the coming weeks on all of those streets. Further updates will be provided throughout the process as schedules take shape due to timing and/or weather.

Through our participation with the Local Administered Project (LAP) Certification program, we're able to take advantage of the Local Maintenance & Improvement Grant (LMIG) and Local Road Administration (LRA) programs for funding with pavement projects on an annual basis. The allocation amount received is based on the total centerline road miles for each local road system and the total population of each county or city as compared with the total statewide centerline road miles and total statewide population. This year, the approximate funding totals are $560,762 as a combination of both programs.

North Lumpkin Street will see the east side parking lane shut down beginning today, August 24th as utility replacement and relocation work begins for the ongoing Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) project. Over the next few days and weeks, natural gas, water, electric, telecom, and storm will all be replaced/relocated for the project.

Keep in mind as well, sidewalks, lighting, etc. are continuing to see construction on North Broad Street as well, and once complete will move to North Lumpkin Street, and then a portion of Highland Avenue which will be the final stage of the project.

Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) projects, formerly Transportation Enhancement Program (TE) projects, are multi-year processes that begin with project applications, costing forecasts, engineering and construction design, environmental studies, easement acquisition, bidding, and finally construction.

The current TAP project, that began with the above process in 2019, encompassing North Broad Street, portions of East/West Highland Avenue, and North Lumpkin Street to include the construction of new and expanded sidewalks, street trees with landscaping, pedestrian lighting and other street furnishings, ADA accessible curb ramps, better defined pedestrian crossings, and storm water upgrades. The total cost estimate of this project is $3,879,119, with 80% being funded through the TAP grant (State) and SPLOST dollars covering the required local match of 20% of the project cost.

The original construction contract for this project, released in September 2025, is 540 days as approved by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). That puts the estimated completion as March 2027, weather allowances as a factor.

Recently, the City of Monroe and Saint Alban's Episcopal Church located at 210 North Broad Street agreed to provide FREE public parking on Monday through Saturday, minus Wednesday evening from 4pm to 9pm, and obviously no parking during Church on Sundays.

This will help to provide for an approximate 40 additional parking spaces available to Downtown Monroe on an almost daily basis!

As a reference, there are currently almost 650 available spaces during regular daytime hours, and over 900 after 5pm available throughout Downtown Monroe. The City of Monroe doesn't operate or own any paid parking lots or spaces, all City owned lots and spaces through agreements are FREE to the public.

Be sure and make plans to visit the Monroe-Walton County Library every Tuesday at 10:30am for Story Time!! It's always a fun morning of books, songs, and puppets with your little ones, up to age 5!

Please be advised that over the next several days, we will be in an extended Heat Advisory throughout much of Georgia, including our area! Actual temperatures will range from the mid-to-upper 90s, with parts of our area likely seeing temperatures climb above 100 degrees later this weekend and into next week. Now, factor in the heat index, and we climb much higher than those temperatures.

The obvious precautions, are to stay indoors and stay cool when possible, drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty, and avoid strenuous activities during peak times of heat when possible. Be sure and keep your pets as cool as possible and hydrated as well!
