Frenchtown Township Fire Department

Frenchtown Township Fire Department Serving the Community of Frenchtown Township Michigan. The Frenchtown Charter Township Fire Department was established in 1949. Most were farmers.
(1)

Firemen were volunteers who had to live in the township. The department had two fire stations, covering 42 square miles of territory. The first Fire Chief was hired in 1951. He lived in a two-bedroom home adjacent to the main fire station with his wife and son. Back then each fire department had a direct emergency phone number. Ours rang in both the Fire Chief's home and at the Sherrif's Departmen

t. The Fire Chief's wife was also a dispatcher, and she answered the phones and kept the times. Firemen were contacted both by the sound of a siren, and by radios kept in their homes. When they heard the siren they would call the station to find out what the emergency was and the call was. In 1975, the Fire Chief retired and a new Fire Chief was hired. He lived a few blocks away and had a farm with a large family. He hired a Deputy Chief, training officer, and a dispatcher/secretary. In 1977, there were over 60 volunteers along with the four full-time staff members. The work schedule was 7 days a week, 10 hours a day. The secretary was given a separate schedule of Monday-Friday 8am-4pm. She worked weekends and holidays so the department could hold special trainings on the weekends. In 1976 many firemen became Emergency Medical Technicians. The state required a lot of training. In 1988, the department became a combination full-time and paid on-call department with two fire stations manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and at least two men at each station. Along with the four full-time staff members, twelve new full-time men were hired to man two of the four stations. Additionally, the volunteers were to be paid for responding to emergency calls. In 1989, a Fire Inspector position was filled by one of the twelve new full-timers. In 1989 and 1992, the department re-built new headquarters and Station 2. The township was also split into two districts. 911 emergency numbers became nation wide, and radio communication greatly improved, allowing the use of much smaller pagers and radios. The Frenchtown Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary disbanded in 2006 after serving the Fire Department and Community for over 50 years. It consisted of mothers, wives, and daughters of the firemen. they held bake sales, garage sales, and raffles to raise money and to provide things needed by victims of fires. They also supported other charities in the state. They bought and wrapped Christmas gifts for the children's Christmas party with money provided by the firemen. They would hold many children's activities such as an Easter egg hunt and Halloween parties. They held a monthly meeting to organize events and meet socially. In 2015 the Frenchtown Firefighters Association seen a need in the community and began to hold fundraisers. The proceeds from their fundraisers help the Association with their charitable work which includes providing supplies for the children, schools and seniors in our community. They help maintain a food pantry in our Township. Along with providing residents of the Frenchtown community with assistance when they are displaced after a fire.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our former department photographer, Wayne Vannice.

Wayne wasn't a firefighter, but he was very much a part of our fire department family. As our Photographer, Wayne took tremendous pride in documenting the work of our members and the story of our department. Whether it was an emergency incident, training exercise, community event, parade, or public education program, Wayne was often there—camera in hand—capturing moments from a perspective many of us never had the opportunity to see ourselves.

Photography wasn't just a hobby for Wayne; it was a passion. Through his lens, he preserved countless memories and showcased the dedication, professionalism, and camaraderie of our department. His photographs became a treasured part of our history and were proudly displayed each year on our board at the Monroe County Fair in the Firefighters Association Building.

Over the years, we came to know Wayne not only as our photographer but as a friend. We had the privilege of getting to know his wife, Dina, and watch his daughter, Jordan, grow up. Even after moving away, Wayne continued to stay in touch, offering his support and following the department he loved so much.

Wayne was a proud veteran who served our country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He loved God, his family, his country, photography, music, and helping others. His quiet nature, kind heart, and sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

We are grateful for the years Wayne dedicated to our department and the memories he preserved for all of us. His photographs will continue to tell our story for generations to come.

Please keep Dina, Jordan, and the entire Vannice family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Thank you, Wayne, for your friendship, your service, and for helping us see our department through your eyes. You will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

Rest easy, Wayne.

Congratulations to Tom Hughes of the Frenchtown Fire Department and Erin Robinson of Monroe Community Ambulance on receiving the Medical Director’s Award at last night's EMA meeting!

The award was presented by Dr. Kemple, Monroe County Medical Director, in recognition of their outstanding care and professionalism while assisting a mother in delivering her baby in the back of an ambulance. While it may not have been the delivery setting Mom had envisioned, she was in the best possible hands, and thanks to Erin and Tom, both mother and baby had a healthy and successful delivery.

This is a remarkable example of the dedication, skill, and compassion our first responders bring to their work every day. We are incredibly proud of Erin and Tom for this well-deserved recognition.

Please join us in congratulating them on this outstanding achievement!

🇺🇸 Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As we spend time with family and friends this holiday weekend, we pause to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of those who gave everything to protect them.

From all of us at the Frenchtown Fire Department, thank you to our fallen heroes and to the families who continue to carry their legacy. ❤️🤍💙

We remember. We honor. We never forget.
