During the June 1 “Behind the City: Live Tour 2026,” attendees got a rare behind-the-scenes look at the Wastewater Treatment Plant and learned just how much happens every single day to keep the system operating safely and efficiently.

Some crowd-favorite facts from the tour:
👀 The collection system includes more than 65 miles of sewer mains, 1,400+ manholes, and 5 lift stations

🧪 7 certified operators monitor, test, and maintain the system daily using an on-site laboratory

🏭 13 major industries contribute nearly 60–70% of the plant’s daily flow

🌧️ The facility treats an average of 1.5–2 million gallons of wastewater every day — with flows reaching up to 3.5 million gallons during wet weather

💻 Plant and lift station operations are monitored through a SCADA control system that helps staff respond quickly and keep everything running smoothly

🚜 More than 3,500 cubic yards of biosolids are processed annually and land-applied under Wisconsin DNR standards

It’s one of those City services most people never think about… until they realize how much daily life depends on it working perfectly. Huge thanks to the WWTP staff for keeping things flowing 24/7. 🚽👏
