Teen Arrested in Skywatch Lane Shooting

The Monroe Police Department has arrested an 18-year-old teenager in connection with the shooting that occurred last week on Skywatch Lane.

Following the initial response, Monroe Police detectives have worked tirelessly investigating the incident and developed information that led to the arrest of Christopher Akwasi Sakyi, 18, of Monroe.

Sakyi was arrested early this morning and charged with:
• Discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling
• Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
• Discharging a firearm in the town limits

No one was injured in the shooting.

Chief Rhett Bolen praised the residents who came forward with information and assisted investigators.

“This is a great example of what can happen when a community and its police department work together,” said Chief Bolen. “Our detectives worked hard to follow every lead, but the information provided by members of the community was an important part of putting the pieces together. We appreciate those who took the time to speak with our investigators, share what they saw and help us hold someone accountable for this dangerous act of violence.”
The Monroe Police Department encourages residents to continue reporting suspicious activity and sharing information that may assist investigators. Even details that may seem insignificant can be important in solving a case.

Sakyi was taken into custody and processed through the Union County Detention Center.

Community Helpers Day

Sgt. Ciminna, Crime Scene Tech Lexie, and our favorite four-legged friend, Ivy, had a great time at Lee Park Preparatory for Community Helpers Day! 🚔🐾

The students got to check out a police car, see some of our gear, and, of course, give Ivy plenty of love. We’re always happy to spend time with our youngest community members and show them that their police department is here for them! ❤️

Monroe Police Seize Thousands of Dollars, Illegal Gambling Devices in Illegal Gambling Investigation

Monroe Police Department investigators have shut down an illegal gambling operation following an investigation that began with a complaint from a concerned citizen.

Around 5 a.m. yesterday, the Monroe Police Department Special Response Team served a search warrant at a business located at 314 Old Morgan Mill Road. The search was the result of an investigation into an illegal gambling facility operating at the location.

During the search, investigators seized thousands of dollars and numerous illegal gambling devices.

The owner of the business, Yang Xiong, 43, of Fort Mill, South Carolina, was arrested and charged with felonious illegal gambling. Xiong also had outstanding warrants from Mecklenburg County related to allegations that he previously operated a similar business.

The investigation began after a citizen brought concerns about the business to the attention of Monroe Police. While illegal gambling operations may appear to be relatively low-level offenses, these types of businesses tend to attract and contribute to other criminal activity in the areas where they operate.

“We appreciate the citizen who took the time to bring this business to our attention,” said Monroe Police Chief Rhett Bolen. “Community members are often the first to notice activity that does not look right, and that information can be extremely valuable to our investigators. We will continue to take action when businesses or individuals bring illegal activity into our community.”

We appreciate Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for their invaluable help in facilitating a safe and smooth search warrant process.

These photos of our Animal Control Officers syringe-feeding teeny-tiny kittens are almost too sweet for words. Behind the badge and uniform, are people with some seriously big hearts 💕

Sometimes saving lives looks like a very tiny kitten who has decided lunch is a life-or-death emergency. 🐾

Y’all better run on down to the Union County Animal Shelter and adopt these sweet babies ASAP!

First Day of School

The first day of school is here! 🎉📚

And judging by these faces, our SROs are absolutely thrilled to be back. Nothing says “I miss summer” quite like these bright, shining smiles 🤣

But in all seriousness, we’re wishing all of our students, teachers, staff and families a safe, successful and great school year! Our SROs are there every day to help keep our schools safe, build relationships with students and staff, and lend a hand whenever they’re needed.

Here’s to a great school year!

K9 W***y Leads Officers to Kilo of Co***ne During Traffic Stop

Around 3:30 this afternoon, Monroe Police Department’s Aggressive Criminal Enforcement unit stopped a vehicle near Dickerson Boulevard and West Roosevelt Boulevard after the driver ran a red light.

During the traffic stop, K9 W***y alerted officers to the vehicle. Officers searched the vehicle and found a kilo of co***ne inside a shoebox.

The driver, identified as Oscar Ismael Munoz-Aleman, 26, of Charlotte, was arrested and charged with:
•Trafficking in Co***ne
•Maintaining a Vehicle for the Purpose of Selling a Controlled Substance

Munoz-Aleman was taken to the Union County Detention Center.

We’re proud of W***y and his ability to help our officers keep dangerous drugs off the streets. He did what he does best and this time it led officers to a significant amount of co***ne.

🛑 Phifer St. from Skyway Dr. to Stafford St. will be closed for the next 24-48 hours with a fallen tree and down power lines.

🛑 We are also aware this has caused some power outages and the appropriate companies have been notified. Please be patient with First Responders, we are receiving a high amount of calls due to the storm.

Monroe Police are investigating after shots were fired into a home on Skywatch Lane.

Last night around 10:20 p.m., Monroe Police responded to the 600 block of Skywatch Lane after a home was reported to have been shot into multiple times.

No one was injured.

Witnesses reported seeing a black vehicle circling the neighborhood prior to the shooting. Investigators are actively working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.

Anyone who may have video from the area that could assist investigators is asked to contact the Monroe Police Department at 704-282-4700.

We also encourage residents to report suspicious activity when they see it. Information that may seem insignificant at the time can sometimes be important to an investigation.
