This evening Monroe volunteer firefighters, Monroe EMS and PD responded to a 2-vehicle collision on lower Monroe Turnpike with one vehicle off the road into a commercial sign. Both drivers were transported to the hospital by Monroe EMS.

Firefighters handled fluids down in the road, shut power to the sign, and assisted EMS and with traffic control.

This morning our volunteer firefighters were out testing that all dry hydrants in our district were operating properly and underground tanks were full.

Dry hydrants are located in certain areas where there are no traditional city water fire hydrants and they’re supplied by large underground water tanks or bodies of water.

While out testing, we responded to an odor of smoke in a residence in the Stevenson district.

On this Throwback Thursday, we recognize the dedication of our past members who had the vision, passion and commitment to build our current fire headquarters. Many built the RT 110 firehouse with their own two hands, some mortgaged their own homes, and all volunteered thousands of hours to raise funds to finance the original building in 1947 and the addition in 1965.

As we enter our 104th year of volunteer service, our members proudly continue to devote their time in maintaining and repairing our building, grounds, fire apparatus and equipment.

Our townwide volunteer firefighters have been very busy this Friday evening due to the storm, handling multiple consecutive calls over the past 3 hours including a house fire in the Stepney district that was quickly contained, multiple homes with electrical issues/lightning strikes, and arcing power lines.

At the time of this post there have been no reported injuries. Firefighters removed a dog from the earlier house fire which was not injured.

Approximately 35 volunteer firefighters from the Monroe, Stepney and Stevenson fire depts have been handling these incidents.

Our firefighters had a great time attending Anthony Katz’s 25th birthday party. Not expected to live past 1 year due to his rare medical condition, firefighters have attended all of Anthony’s birthday parties over the years given his love of fire trucks and firefighters. 10 years ago, Anthony was made an honorary Monroe junior firefighter.

His family and friends, who have showed tremendous support and positivity over the last 25 years, put on the most amazing ‘Christmas in July’ party we’ve ever seen!

At approximately 4pm today, Town of Monroe volunteer firefighters were dispatched to a reported house fire on Barn Hill Rd. Units conducted an aggressive interior operation and quickly contained the fire to one room, and removed a dog that was located in a crate due to the resident not being home.

One room sustained heavy fire damage and the rest of the unit sustained significant smoke damage, leaving it uninhabitable, but the adjoining unit of the two-family home sustained only minimal smoke damage.

No civilians or firefighters were injured and fortunately the rescued dog appears to be doing well. The cause appears accidental in nature and is under investigation by the fire marshal.

Crews remained on scene for overhaul and ventilation for approximately 90 minutes. 30 volunteer firefighters from the Monroe, Stevenson and Stepney FDs operated on the scene along with Monroe EMS and PD. Additional firefighters from Shelton and Trumbull responded but were returned while enroute.
