🚧 TRAFFIC ALERT – NC 218/Mill Grove Rd Roundabout Closure 🚧

Fairview Fire & Rescue would like to remind residents that the roundabout at NC 218 and Mill Grove Road will be closed June 22–25 for NCDOT maintenance work.

Detour Information:

➡️ NC 218 Eastbound Traffic
Rock Hill Church Rd → Mill Grove Rd → Noah Helms Rd → Crowell Dairy Rd → NC 218

⬅️ NC 218 Westbound Traffic
Follow the same route in reverse.

🚗 Mill Grove Road Traffic
Rock Hill Church Rd → NC 218 → Brief Rd

Please expect delays and follow posted detours. Emergency responders will remain in service, but increased traffic on detour routes may affect travel times.

Please note the water restrictions put in place today

Important Update: Union County is moving to Stage 2 of our Water Shortage Response Plan, effective today. We haven’t been in Stage 2 since 2009.

What does this mean for Union County Water customers?

💧Irrigation use is now limited to no more than two days per week and certain hours. Customers who use spray irrigation systems need to adjust their system schedules and follow the guidance at https://ucgov.info/4nygw9S.

🚗 No personal car washing, except at commercial car washes.

🛟 No filling of new pools or fountains, except to support aquatic life.

Stage 2 also implements higher rates for certain customers, including residential customers with significantly high usage of 10,000 gallons per month or more. To reduce overall water consumption, we’re asking everyone to conserve water when possible. Take shorter showers, fix leaky fixtures quickly, and reduce outdoor water usage – especially after a rare rainy day.

The statewide burn ban remains in effect until further notice despite weekend rain in some areas. Persistent dry weather and increasing rainfall deficits from the last several months have left most of the state needing 10 inches of rain or more.

“While the rainfall we received over the weekend was a welcome sight, it offered little to no relief from widespread drought conditions while being nowhere near enough to reduce our wildfire risk,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Even the areas that received the heaviest amount of rain will quickly dry out from the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Until we get some additional rain and see more green-up in our forests, holding the burn ban in place statewide is the best option right now.”

While green-up and leaf-out are progressing at normal rate, low soil moisture, dry surface fuels and persistent low humidity are contributing to wildfire activity. For Western North Carolina, excessive forest fuels from Hurricane Helene are more available now than they were in 2025, low water levels in coastal areas have helped produce intense fire behavior where ground fire will likely be a long-term issue, and the Piedmont experienced 87 new wildfire starts over the weekend alone. Extended attack and mop-up efforts will be taxing and long-winded until drought conditions improve.

Just a reminder that the burn ban is still in place. Conditions remain dry, and any outdoor burning can quickly become dangerous.

We also want to thank Hemby Bridge Fire Department, Unionville Volunteer Fire Department, N.C. Forest Service, and Union EMS for their assistance.

Please do your part and avoid any open burning.

Burn Ban Reminder: Union County is still under a burn ban due to dry conditions and increased fire risk. The Fire Marshal's increased measures align with the statewide burn ban from the N.C. Forest Service.

All outdoor burning is prohibited - including fire pits and burning yard debris. Violations may result in fines.
