Happy 5/5!

The Quint (or Quintuple combination pumper) was originally manufactured in Germany in 1912 and made its way to the United States in the 1930s. This type of fire apparatus combines the functions of a fire engine and a fire truck into one vehicle that can perform multiple functions. Ensuring we are always prepared to serve our community and proving 'quintessential' for the volunteer fire service. It is called a "Quint" because it has 5 main features: aerial ladder, ground ladders, fire hose, fire pump, and carries water.

Specially, Quint 1 contains:
1. 77' Steel Aerial Ladder
2. A total of 154' of ground ladders (2x 35', 1x 28', 2× 16', 1x 14', 1x 10')
3. 800' of 5" hose, 600' of 3" hose, 425' of 2.5" hose, 200' of 2" hose, 300' of 1 3/4" hose, 100' of 1 1/2" hose
4. Hale Q-max 2000 gallon per minute pump
5. 508 gallon water tank

Last night, 192 Engine transferred into Station 113 River's Edge while they operated on a working structure fire in Braddock. This ensured their communities weren't without fire services for other emergenices. While in Station, the crew of 6 interior firefighters ran a call for a reported fire in a laundromat in Swissvale, which ended up being unfounded. Additionally, we had 10 personnel in Company 1 to cover calls in the Municipality.

Congratulations to FF/EMT Brazelton, FF/EMT Fallin, and FF Ortiz of Company 1 on successfully completing their Essentials of Firefighting Series!

Over the past four months, they’ve dedicated countless hours to learning the fundamentals of the fire service, building the knowledge and skills that mark the first step toward becoming interior firefighters. This achievement reflects not only their hard work, but their commitment to doing the job the right way.

What makes this even more meaningful is that every hour of training was done voluntarily—time given up to better serve and protect our community. That kind of dedication doesn’t go unnoticed.

We’re proud of their effort, their perseverance, and their continued commitment to the fire service.

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

Behind every call for help is a calm voice, a steady hand, and someone who refuses to let chaos win.

This week, we recognize the incredible professionals of Monroeville Communications and Allegheny County Emergency Services—the ones who answer the call, gather the details, and make sure help is already on the way before we even hit the road.

They are the unseen first responders. The steady presence in someone’s worst moment. The link between panic and action.

It takes a special kind of person to do this job—focused, compassionate, and unshakable when it matters most.

To our dispatchers: we hear you, we trust you, and we couldn’t do what we do without you.

Thank you for everything you do—today and every day. 📞🚨

Today, members of the department took advantage of the beautiful spring weather to complete a full station spring cleaning detail. 🧼🚒

Crews deep cleaned the station both inside and out, spent time organizing storage rooms, and completed some outdoor improvements including installing new garden hose reels and refreshing the mulch in our planter beds.

All of this work was completed by our dedicated members on a completely volunteer basis. This behind-the-scenes effort is a true testament to the pride our volunteers take in their department and community, helping ensure we’re always ready to serve safely and effectively.

Thank you to everyone who came out and put in the work today—your time and dedication do not go unnoticed!

Just after 10 am this morning, Monroeville Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire in Company 1's first due district. Shortly after dispatch, it was updated to a fire inside the attached garage. C-41 first arrived on scene and established command. Engine 12 arrived as the first due engine and pulled the primary attack line. Engine 41 arrived shortly behind, establishing a water supply and pulling a backup line. Truck 4 laddered the alpha side of the building and assisted with overhaul. The fire was contained to the garage. The Allegheny County Fire Marshall was requested to the scene.

As we continue celebrating our 100th anniversary, we took some time to dig through the history right here in our station—old photos, newspaper clippings, and moments that tell the story of where we’ve been.

From the days of the “Wheat Benders” to the department you see today, these pieces of history represent the generations of volunteers who built this company and the community that has supported us every step of the way.

But we know some of the best memories aren’t hanging on our walls…

If you have old photos, stories, or memories of Monroeville Volunteer Fire Company #1, we’d love to see and hear them. Drop them in the comments and help us continue telling the story of 100 years of service.

Here’s to the memories that got us here—and the ones still being made. ❤️

Happy 100th Birthday, Monroeville Volunteer Fire Department Company 1!

On April 1, 1926, what is now Monroeville Volunteer Fire Company #1 began as the Patton Township Volunteer Fire Company—the very first fire company in Monroeville.

In those early days, the township was largely farmland, earning our members the nickname “Wheat Benders,” a nod to the fields that once defined this community.

Over the last century, we’ve grown alongside Monroeville—officially becoming Monroeville Volunteer Fire Company #1 in 1955, expanding into EMS services in the 1940s, and continually adapting to meet the needs of those we serve. From building renovations that started in 1973 and 2015, to the honor of receiving the final custom-built American LaFrance fire engine (Engine 11), our history is built on progress, pride, and service.

Today, our fleet includes Engine 12, Quint 1, Squad 1, Utility 1, Ambulances 18 and 19—but more importantly, it’s powered by the dedicated volunteers and personnel who continue this legacy every day.

For 100 years, through every call, every emergency, and every moment in between, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to this community.

Here’s to a century of service—and the next 100 years ahead.
