As many people noticed, last month the wetlands was drained on the town-owned Archibald property, next to Route 13 near the New Boston border. The Conservation Commission was taken by surprise, so we reached out to see what had happened.

The Department of Transportation District 5 said the state DOT tore out the beaver dam because the water level had risen too high and was saturating the gravel under Route 13, causing sinkholes. We had a wet spring and the matter became urgent.

Depending on funding, the DOT may pay someone to trap the beavers, which have begun working to rebuild the dam. The Conservation Commission will discuss with them the possibility of building an overflow culvert or some system of blocking the beavers.

Come Celebrate Earth Day, Saturday, April 22nd with the Mont Vernon
Conservation Commission at Herlihy Swamp from 9 am - 10:30 am. We will
take a leisurely short hike on a half mile trail. If you haven't been
to Herlihy Swamp Conservation Area, it is a beautiful area to enjoy
nature. We will also do a little clipping and clean up as needed.
Feel free to bring small clippers, gloves, or rake if interested in
helping out (or just come to walk the trail!) Meet at the parking area
on Brook Road at 9 am.

Please consider participating in NH BioBlitz this month! It's a great way to get outside, learn more about animal and plant species in our town and contribute to scientific knowledge.

Please see the article below for more info as well as the link directly to NH BioBlitz:

With all the rain we have been getting lately there is a lot of standing water and mud on the trails out there! Please PLEASE do not walk around the muddy areas, even if another small trail already exists around the mud. This creates undesignated trails, which create erosion and greater impact on the surrounding area. This is one of the Leave No Trace principles! You can usually find rocks to walk on in the middle of the trail, or if you're wearing water-proof shoes - just walk right through the mud/water. Give it a shot! Makes you feel like a little kid again.

Is this Narnia? No - it's the trail on the town's Archibald Property! Come visit before the snow disappears.

Parking lot is on the west side of Rt. 13 just before the New Boston town line; the yellow gate is visible from the road. The trail connects to Lamson Farm, both the green and the blue trail.

We are just a couple of days away from Hebert Trail Day!
Please join us this Saturday the 12th at 9 am at the Hebert Forest trailhead on Salisbury Rd to create a new loop trail on that property. Hiking a trail that you have put work into is immensely satisfying. And plus, the weather looks great!

We are two weeks away from Hebert Forest Trail Work Day and still looking for volunteers. Please consider lending a hand for a few hours to make a trail that we can all enjoy.

Details:
When: Saturday the 12th starting at 9am

Where: Hebert Forest Trailhead on Salisbury Rd (about a mile North of intersection with Beech Hill Rd, on the right)

What we will be doing: Digging a section of new trail, clearing vegetation in order to connect existing trails into a nice loop

COVID-19 considerations: Please wear a mask and bring your own work gloves. We will split into smaller groups and try to spread out as much as possible. Please bring your own water and snacks.

Please RSVP and send your questions to Aneliya Cox at [email protected]

The Mont Vernon Conservation Commission is planning a trailwork day at Hebert Forest on September12th (13th if the weather is bad on Saturday). The project is connecting two trails in order to create a loop. We will be digging trail, clearing vegetation and cutting/moving small fallen trees. We would love your help!

The plan is to meet at the Hebert Lot parking lot on Salisbury Rd at 9 am, have a quick meeting to break everyone into smaller groups, grab our tools and get to work. We will have tools available, but if anyone has pick mattocks to dig trail or loppers to cut vegetation, feel free to bring your own. You can stay for as long as you want.

COVID-19 note: In order to stay safe we would plan on everyone wearing masks, breaking into small groups, everyone wearing work gloves when handling tools and in general trying to stay 6ft+ apart as much as possible. Normally, we would provide coffee/water and snacks, but this does not seem safe right now, so please bring all of your own!

Please RSVP or send questions to Aneliya Cox at [email protected]. We look forward to having another great trail for everyone to enjoy!
