We’ve been very busy this past week! On Tuesday we responded three volunteer firefighters an engine and a water tender for mutual aid to a vegetation fire in Big Springs near the elementary school. On Wednesday we responded an engine and two firefighters to the Prather Incident, a structure fire in the City of Montague. Then, on Thursday we responded one firefighter and a water tender for mutual aid to another vegetation fire on Ager Rd. in Hornbrook. Finally, on Friday we responded two firefighters and an engine to a vegetation fire in the Montague Fire Protection District. We would like to thank our volunteers for taking time out of their personal lives to respond to calls to help the community without expecting any kind of compensation. Even with twenty volunteers on our roster we will often only have as many as five available at any given time to drop everything and show up which is why we have mutual aid agreements with surrounding agencies and Cal Fire. This is the eternal struggle with volunteer fire departments and nothing new for ours. If you’d like to join, we welcome anyone that has the time and commitment to show up. We’d like to thank everyone that showed up to the Prather Incident whether they were volunteers, paid firefighters or Good Samaritans. We were dispatched to a barn on fire off of W. Prather St. and responded with two firefighters and Engine 512. Upon arrival we gave a scene size up and continued all the mutual aid dispatched while simultaneously pulling two attack lines and charging them within 5 minutes of the original time of dispatch. Efforts to put water on the seat of the fire were significantly hampered by access as the barn was sealed up tight. Our Captain, recognizing this, dropped the nozzle and returned to the engine to get a chainsaw to create access. Good Samaritans picked up the attack lines and continued to cool the exterior of the structure until we could create access and our mutual aid partners showed up. Good Samaritans also assisted with tagging a hydrant for water supply which, in our haste to get tied in, we overlooked instructing the flushing of the hydrant before connecting. We later experienced a loss in pressure that, upon breaking down the supply line, became evident that it had resulted from rust scale that had clogged the intake screen on the engine. The loss in pressure only lasted a minute or two as a water tender was already at scene and while we switched over to that tender connection. The fire was extinguished with no extension to any exposures or injuries of any kind. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Again, thank you to everyone that showed up to help!

We still have sponsor commitments trickling in for the 2026 Freedom Festival and we didn’t want to miss saying thank you to everyone!! If we get more we will update this post but this is everyone that is in as of this date. The Freedom Festival faced some difficulties in 2026 with our carnival provider pulling out 2 weeks before the show, however we were able to get Wold Amusements to come to take their place if we could get sponsors to help pay for their fuel to get here on short notice. Special thanks to J. Cota Forestry, Siskiyou Distributing, Golden Rush Espresso, Shasta Valley Pest Control, Mountain Air Heating and Air Conditioning and Safeway Painting for stepping up to contribute to saving the Freedom Festival for 2026!! We are forever grateful for your efforts!! Additional thanks to our city administrator and public works for all of your hard work behind the scenes for the logistical efforts to make this happen! Special thanks to Montague Volunteer Firefighters Alex Hopkins, Brandon Schroeder, Amanda Hopkins, Mason Mercier, Mario Hinson, Ezra Blea, Juan Gonzalez, Joseph Daniels, Chaz Jones, Madison Castro and the Firefighter Explorers for assistance with various burn projects and/or standing by to assist with the Freedom Festival! Thanks to Cal Fire BC2612, BC2609 and Yreka and Hornbrook Engines for assisting us with the control burn in Hogue Park this year! Thanks to Montague Community Church for organizing the Freedom Festival Parade! Thanks to Kojima Racing and Frankie’s Auto Detailing for organizing the Freedom Festival Car Show! Thank you to Dave Peterson and Sofia Renee Band for the amazing fireworks, choreography and music written/composed specifically for the Freedom Festival! Montague Fire Department would like to introduce our newly promoted Captain, Brandon Schroeder! Brandon comes to us as a freshly retired U.S. Army Special Forces Sergeant First Class (E7) who served in the Army for 14 years, 11 of which as an Airborne Green Beret! Finishing his military career with Combat Diver and Senior Combat Engineer Sergeant and having copious experience leading and training soldiers in four separate overseas tours!

Additionally, Brandon has an extensive fire service background that started here in Montague where he had previously worked his way up to Captain with Montague Fire Department, graduating top of his class at the Fire Academy and obtaining his Firefighter 1 Certificate and subsequently working two full seasons with Cal Fire. Brandon also spent two and a half years as a resident firefighter at U.C. Davis Fire Department where he was 1 of only 7 selected out of an estimated 150 candidates and where he simultaneously earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering!
