***Scam alert***
Be alert, recent uptick in phone scams. Scammers are contacting people and falsely claiming to be law enforcement officers, alleging the individuals they contact face immediate arrest unless they provide payment in some form (i.e. gift cards, cash transfers, etc.).
Key Points:
* The Montague County Sheriff's Office never solicits payments over the phone to resolve legal issues. Any communication requesting such payment is fraudulent.
* Scam Tactics: Scammers often use convincing language and may even impersonate real Deputies/ Officer's or use spoofed phone numbers to appear legitimate.
* Protect Yourself: If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a Deputy or representative of law enforcement demanding payment, do not comply. Instead, hang up immediately and contact the Montague County Sheriff's Office directly to verify the call's authenticity.
* Vigilance is Key: Stay vigilant and cautious when answering unsolicited phone calls. Never provide personal or financial information to unknown callers. Discuss this warning with family members, especially seniors, who may be more vulnerable to these scams.

The Montague County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to our partners at the Texas Department of Public Safety.

We mourn the tragic loss of Trooper Sergio Romero, age 27, who was killed in the line of duty while attempting to stop a vehicle along U.S. Highway 287 near Childress.

Trooper Romero made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the citizens of Texas. His courage, dedication, and commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten.

We stand in unwavering support of the Texas DPS, Trooper Romero’s family, friends, and fellow troopers during this incredibly difficult time. We honor his service and sacrifice, and we pray for peace, strength, and comfort for all who are grieving.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Gloria Byork on June 7, 2026.

Gloria dedicated more than two decades of service to the Sheriff's Office, serving from 1985 until her retirement in 2006 as Jail Sergeant.

Her years of service left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of working alongside her. Gloria's dedication, integrity, and unwavering work ethic will not be forgotten.
Please keep her family, friends, and former coworkers in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Rest in peace, Gloria. Thank you for your years of faithful service and the legacy you leave behind. Your watch has ended, but your memory will live on in the hearts of many.

Please remember that inmate records are public knowledge, and scammers may use this information to sound legitimate.

If you receive a call like this:
• Do NOT send money
• Hang up immediately
• Report the incident to your local law enforcement agency

Here’s how you can help protect yourself and your neighbors:

Always lock your car, even when parked at home.

Remove valuables or store them out of sight.

Never leave keys or fi****ms in your vehicle.

🏠 Protect Your Home & Property

Lock all doors and windows when you leave.

Install motion-sensor lights or security cameras if possible.

Keep tools, equipment, and outdoor valuables secured.

👀 Be Aware & Report Suspicious Activity

If you see something unusual, report it immediately.

Provide as much detail as possible, including location, vehicle descriptions, and behavior.

Your report could prevent a crime or help solve one.
