This week's Throwback Thursday: A Tougher Time

One of seven children, Sarah (King) Tuthill was sent at age 6 to Montauk to live with Loretta Dickinson, a friend of her mother’s who’d indicated that “she would like to have one of the girls” and who lived in “better circumstances.”

This time of year, the dawn chorus of birdsong combines mating, territorial, alarm, and location vocalizations from resident, summering, and migrating species, rousing even the deepest sleepers with a cacophonous morning concert.

On Sunday, the Montauk Library Bird Club went birding with South Fork Natural History Museum & Nature Center (SOFO) and Third House Nature Center at Big Reed Pond in Montauk. Collectively, we saw 40 species while hiking the Blue Trail! Some highlights included Scarlet Tanagers, Eastern Kingbirds, Common Yellowthroats, and Northern Parulas.
