The Montclair Police Department is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Lieutenant Jim Michel. Lt. Michel was just 5 months into his retirement after 28 years of dedicated service to the Montclair community. The Montclair Police Department sends its thoughts and prayers to Lt. Michel’s family during this difficult time.

Lieutenant Jim Michel began his career with the Montclair Police Department in December 1997. In 1993, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served three years in a Light Infantry Air Assault Unit assigned to the 25th Infantry Division, Schoefield Barracks, Hawaii. He deployed to Japan and Haiti. Lt. Michel was honorably discharged in 1996.

Lt. Michel attended the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Academy in 1997. Lt. Michel worked uniformed patrol, he was an FTO, DRE, a member of the POP team, and a narcotics investigator with SBWESTNET. Lt. Michel held a four-year assignment as Detective where he worked fraud, property crimes, and crimes against persons.

In 2011, Jim was named Officer of the Year. He is also a two-time recipient of both the MADD Award and Life Saving Award.

In August 2013, Lt. Michel promoted to Sergeant. He supervised Patrol, the Major Accident Investigation Team and the Field Training Program. In October 2016, Lt. Michel supervised the Detective Bureau and supervised several significant cases including major assaults, robberies, and homicides.

In November 2018, Lt. Michel promoted to Lieutenant. As a Field Services Lieutenant, he managed patrol operations, dispatch, Mobile Field Force, the Field Training Program, the Special Enforcement Team, the Major Accident Investigation Team, volunteers, the Police Explorer Program, recruitment, and community relations.

As a Support Services Lieutenant, he served as the Department’s POST Coordinator, managed the Detective Bureau, Tech Services, Evidence, and the Records Bureau.

Lieutenant Michel thank you for your 28-years of service to the citizens of Montclair and the Montclair Police Department.

On Friday, Montclair Police Department’s Lieutenant Dominguez graduated POST’s Supervisory Leadership Institute, Class 564. The Sherman Block Leadership Institute is a dynamic, months-long program designed specifically for law enforcement supervisors.

The Montclair Police Department extends its heartfelt condolences to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department following the tragic loss of a San Dimas Station Deputy during the 2026 Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay.

This week, Matthew O’Deane, Senior Law Enforcement Consultant at California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), formally presented Chief Reed with his Executive POST Certificate during a ceremony held at the Police Department. This certificate is earned after two years serving as a Police Chief.

Chief Reed began his career at the Montclair Police Department in 1997 and soon thereafter was hired as a police officer after graduating from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Academy Class 140. Early in his career, was recognized for his exemplary service when he was named Officer of the Year in 2006.

He was promoted to Sergeant in 2007, and earned his Intermediate, Advanced, and Supervisory POST certificates by 2009. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2010, and earned his Management POST Certificate in 2014, followed by his promotion to Captain in 2016. He was promoted to Chief of Police on January 1, 2024—an achievement further highlighted when he was selected as the department’s Annual Achievement Award recipient that same year. He earned his Executive POST certificate on January 7, 2026.

Throughout his career, Chief Reed has completed extensive professional training, including but not limited to a 36-hour DUI course, 40-hour Field Training Officer course, 16-hour Less Lethal Instructor course, 40-hour Traffic Collision Investigation course, 16-hour OIS Management course, 80-hour POST Supervisory course, 24-hour Team Building workshop, 24-hour Supervisory Update course, 104-hour POST Management course, 24-hour Internal Affairs course, 24-hour Training Managers workshop, 24-hour Budgeting course, 32-hour Role of the Police Chief course, 24-hour Police Chief course, 80-hour POST Executive Development course, and several POST Executive seminars.

Chief Reed holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and administration from the Union Institute, along with a minor in Criminal Justice from Cal Poly Pomona. He is also a graduate of the first class of the California Police Chiefs’ Executive Leadership Institute through Claremont Graduate University.

He serves on the governing board of Montclair Hospital Medical Center and is currently a member of the California Police Chiefs’ Association and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Chief Reed emphasizes the importance of community policing and remains committed to fostering public trust through accountability and high-performance standards in his role as Chief of Police. He has dedicated his work turning Montclair Police Department into a modern police agency with multiple special assignments and opportunities for its employees to better serve the Montclair Community.

On today’s date at approximately 1:37 p.m., officers responded to a report of a stabbing at the Transit Center located at 5091 Richton Street. Upon arrival, officers located a 27-year-old male victim suffering from a stab wound to the neck.

While on scene a suspect was detained and identified as 27-year-old Dominique Tarell Sherow Jr. of Moreno Valley, California.

During the investigation, officers determined that the victim and the suspect had been involved in a verbal altercation, during which the suspect stabbed the victim in the neck with an unknown object.

After the stabbing, the suspect demanded the victim’s belongings and took the victim’s sunglasses. The suspect was arrested and booked at the West Valley Detention Center. The victim is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

State law requires the Montclair Police Department to annually submit for review a Military Equipment Annual Report to the City Council. Government Code §7072(b) requires that, within 30-days of submitting and publicly releasing an annual military equipment report to hold at least one well–publicized and conveniently located community engagement meeting with the public. The meeting will be hosted by Captain Brian Ventura. The military annual report has been posted to the City of Montclair’s website for the public’s review.
