Accountability Means No Double Standards 🏛️📉

At the latest City Council meeting, a Montclair resident called attention to a stark policy contrast regarding how municipal debt and financial obligations are handled by our local government.

According to the public meeting record, the city is moving forward with placing property liens on 177 local families for past-due trash and sewer utility accounts. Yet, as the speaker highlighted, the grand total of what all 177 families owe combined is less than the $500,000+ court judgment owed individually by Councilmember Ben Lopez following a civil lawsuit brought by two city employees.

The Core Question:

When everyday citizens face immediate consequences like water shut-offs or property liens for code enforcement fines, should a sitting official be held to the same standard? As a fiduciary trustee overseeing millions in public taxpayer funds, accountability means ensuring that public rules apply equally to everyone—dais included.

💬 What do you think? Should elected officials be held to the same financial collection standards as residents? Share your thoughts below.
