Sustainable Back-to-School

Back-to-school season is a great time to make a few simple, sustainable choices. Reusing supplies, repairing what you already have, and choosing secondhand items can help reduce waste while saving money.

Which of these ideas will you try this school year?

Eucalyptus Trees on Highway 9

At the August 18, 2026 City Council meeting the Council will consider whether or not to adopt a resolution to support the removal of the eucalyptus trees in the median of Highway 9 through Monte Sereno.

Eucalyptus trees are known to be a potential fire hazard as their bark and oils make them highly flammable. They also have shallow and widespread roots which can make them prone to uprooting and falling in high winds, particularly if the soil is wet from rain.

More information is available in the staff report, which is available in the City Council meeting agenda (item #5) online at: https://montesereno.civicweb.net/Portal/MeetingInformation.aspx?Org=Cal&Id=7472

The City is seeking resident feedback and comments on this issue. Comments can be made at the meeting (in person or remotely by signing on with the Zoom link at the top of the agenda). Comments can also be emailed ahead of the meeting to the City Manager at: [email protected]

Pet Waste

Summer is a great time to get outside and enjoy a walk with your dog. Please remember to pick up after your pet and place the waste in the trash. Pet waste can contain harmful bacteria, and water from sprinklers or hoses can carry it into storm drains that flow directly to the Bay.

Automotive Pollutants

🚗 Your car can leave more than tire tracks behind.
Oil, coolant, brake dust, and other vehicle fluids can collect on driveways, parking lots, and streets. When it rains, these pollutants can wash into storm drains and flow directly to local creeks without treatment.
Help protect our waterways by:
🔧 Repairing vehicle leaks promptly
🧽 Using a commercial car wash
🧹 Cleaning spills with absorbent material instead of water
♻️ Properly disposing of used oil and automotive fluids
A well-maintained vehicle helps keep our streets and creeks clean. Learn more at CleanCreeks.org. 💧

Celebrate the 4th of July Safely

Nationwide, fireworks spark more than 31,000 fires a year. Because July is one of our driest, our communities are at peak fire risk. Help prevent devastating fires and injuries by leaving the light shows to the experts.

To protect our homes, pets, and loved ones, please remember that all consumer fireworks—including those labeled "safe and sane"—are illegal to buy, sell, or use in Monte Sereno.

Let’s keep our neighborhood safe and peaceful. Instead of lighting fireworks, consider attending one of the many incredible, permitted professional fireworks displays or community drone shows planned throughout the area.

View all professional shows at www.sccfd.org/fireworks.

Reminder: If you see an active fire or a medical emergency, please call 9-1-1 immediately.

Have a happy, safe, and fun Independence Day!
