On December 13, 2022, Captain M. Gill, ID 13850, retired from the California Highway Patrol. Captain Gill began his career as a cadet with CTC III-94. He graduated the Academy and reported to the West Los Angeles Area Office. Captain Gill had various assignments in the CHP including working with the Vehicle Theft Unit in Southern Division. He spent his entire career servicing the citizens of Southern Division. Captain Gill rose through the ranks, finally ending his career as the Captain of the East Los Angeles Area Office. Several of our Officers assisted with the last delivery for CHiPs for Kids. CHP East LA Officers dropped off several hundred toys at the Edmund D. Edelman Children’s Court in Monterey Park today. Edelman Children's Court focuses entirely on children in abuse and neglect cases. The toys brought today will bring smiles to many children at the court.
Thank you to the Edelman Court staff in allowing us to assist them with toys for another year!
With the help from on of our Explorers, J. Gonzales, the CHP East Los Angeles Area was able to deliver toys to the after school program at Rancho Santa Gertrude Elementary. Thank you to everyone who donated to our Chips For Kids Toy Drive! Thanks to our amazing donors we were able to bring Christmas cheer to thousands of kids this year! Stay tuned for more photos of toy distributions!
This morning Officer Briano, Explorer Olmos, and Explorer Deniz represented CHP East LA and participated in Shop with a Cop. Thank you to the National Latino Peace Officers Association East Los Angeles Chapter for inviting us to participate!
This past Saturday our officers received multiple call of several dogs running within lanes of SR-60. Officer McAdams responded and with the help of good samaritans, was able to rescue several dogs and move them safety. Officer McAdams put five greyhounds in his patrol car and took them to the local shelter. If these are your dogs or you may know the owner, you can reach out to Friends of North Central Shelter - Los Angeles Animal Services
Thanks to the great samaritans who stopped and assisted Officer McAdams. 🐕🦮🐶🐾🦴
That’s not how a Patrol Vehicle is supposed to look! While our Officer was seated in his patrol vehicle finishing up an investigation, his vehicle was sideswiped by a big-rig. The impact of the collision nearly tore off both driver side doors.
If you see our Officers working, assisting motorists, or conducting investigations on the freeway, please drive with caution. We want to make sure all of our Officers get home safely! 🚔🚓👮🏻♂️👮🏽👮🏾♀️

It was a wet and busy morning for our Officers today! We expect more rain in the forecast through the weekend and we want to remind everybody to slow down, take extra time to arrive to your destination, and be careful on the slick roadways.

Stay Safe and Happy Holidays! 🎅🏻🤶🏻🎄🦌
The California Highway Patrol would like to wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving. This weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year. If you choose to travel, always buckle up, make sure you obey all speed limits and never drive impaired. Have a safe and wonderful holiday!
When transporting cargo, make sure you drive cautiously and recognize the dangers of driving too fast. This driver was lucky he didn’t get injured nor injure any other motorists. The cargo was so heavy it left an indentation on the freeway, causing our partners at Caltrans to repair the slab of freeway immediately and make it safe for the motoring public to travel on. Please watch your speed and drive safe this weekend.
Officer Dhaliwal and Officer Placencia quickly arrived to another crash to help the parties involved as they were blocking lanes of the freeway. Upon their arrival, they realized a toddler was injured. As they looked in the backseat, they saw a car seat was sideways and not properly secured. Our partners arrived and provided medical aid to the driver and injured toddler before transporting them to the hospital. After a thorough investigation, the driver was subsequently arrested for suspicion of DUI.
It’s never safe to drink and drive. Always designate a sober driver.
If you need assistance with the installation of a car seat you can contact your local CHP office to schedule a free car seat check appointment. The East LA Area Office number is 323-980-4600.

This Labor Day weekend the CHP will be patrolling California’s roadways in increased numbers, to help keep the motoring public safe. During last year’s Labor Day weekend, 31 people sadly lost their lives and the CHP made over 900 DUI arrests.
If choosing to travel, please be mindful of the larger-than-normal holiday traffic and be patient, drive at a safe and legal speed, put away all distractions, make sure everyone in your vehicle is buckled up and never drive impaired.
Last night, Officers responded to reports of a traffic collision on I-710 northbound, near Bandini Blvd. The collision caused one of the vehicles to spill a large amount of oil onto the roadway. A cleanup crew was called out to clear the oil spill and get motorists safely through the area. Upon clearing the spill, the street sweeper caught fire forcing all northbound lanes to be shut down. Eventually, all hazards were cleared, no injuries were reported, and all lanes are now open!

CHP SEEKING ASSISTANCE IN FATAL TRAFFIC COLLISION Los Angeles, CA – On Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at approximately 9:25 P.M., a fatal traffic collision occurred involving a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse and an adult pedestrian, in an unincorporated area of East Los Angeles, near Calvary Cemetery. The vehicle pictured below was traveling southbound on Eastern Avenue, north of 5th Street, in the left lane, and came to a complete stop for a pedestrian walking across lanes. The vehicle is described as a newer model black pick-up truck. We are seeking assistance from the driver and/or passengers of the black pick-up truck. Anyone with information regarding this vehicle is asked to contact California Highway Patrol’s 24/7 public line at (323) 259-3200 and reference CHP Case No: 9535-2021-01088. #eastlosangeles #boyleheights #losangeles #easternave #pleasereachout @hildasolis @wendycarrillo #witnessinfo
Officer C. Latschar #17943 explains why it's so important to "SLOW DOWN" while driving. The 2min:35sec mark of this video is one of thousands of unexpected events that happen on the roads you travel on. If you are speeding when unexpected events occur, your safety, the safety of your passengers, & your ability to SAFELY avoid a collision are greatly reduced (to zero depending on how fast you're speeding). In an effort to save lives & improve traffic safety, @chp_eastlosangeles recently conducted a Primary Collision Factor Saturated Enforcement Operation within East Los Angeles, the I-710 freeway, & the SR-60 freeway. 😎🚨 We focused on areas of our jurisdiction with high crash statistics. ☆ Over 100 total enforcement contacts were made. ☆ 93 tickets were issued. ☆ 71 tickets were for speed. ☆ 5 commercial tickets issued. ☆ 1 arrested for no bail warrant. The CHP reminds drivers that speeding is illegal, dangerous, & can have fatal consequences. Join us at WWW.CHPCAREERS.COM

Each year, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) recognizes and honors law enforcement officials for their continuous efforts in DUI enforcement. Each arrest is a life saved. Many of our officers have arrested numerous DUI offenders, however, the following officers were recently recognized by Captain M. Gill #13850 for their significant achievements in apprehending impaired drivers during 2019: * Officer R. Arroyo #21599 * Officer L. Contreras #21538 * Officer M. Camargo #21773 * Officer R. Diaz #21795 * Officer B. Hernandez #21381 * Officer D. Castaneda #21551 It's an honor and privilege to be recognized by MADD, but we'd honestly prefer a year when NO AWARDS are handed out because NO ONE CHOSE TO DRIVE IMPAIRED.
After 30 years of dedicated service, we congratulate Sergeant Louis Borunda, #12772, on his well deserved retirement. Sergeant Borunda entered the California Highway Patrol Academy with CTC 1-89, and upon graduation, reported to the East Los Angeles Area. Within his first six months, Sergeant Borunda earned his 10851 pin, and continued earning a reputation for being a hard charger. As an officer, he was a true "road dawg," and became a highly respected FTO. After a brief assignment with a local P.D., he returned to the CHP in 1998 and was assigned to the Central Los Angeles Area. He then traveled to the Baldwin Park Area in 1999. On January 1, 2019, he promoted to the rank of Sergeant and transferred "back to where it all began in East L.A.". Sergeant Borunda has earned the respect of all members of the CHP family. This is Child Passenger Safety Week -- we need your help in spreading the message of keeping children SAFER & away from DANGER by checking to make sure they are PROPERLY secured. Vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for children age 13 and under. The CHP, which works every day to help prevent those deaths, is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to promote Child Passenger Safety Week. In 2017, NHTSA data showed that 37 percent of the children killed in car crashes were unrestrained, & almost 60 percent of children’s safety seats ARE USED INCORRECTLY. Useful information about the proper seat choice and installation tips are available at https://www.chp.ca.gov/Programs-Services/Programs/Child-Safety-Seats. California law requires that all children under 8 years of age be properly restrained in an appropriate child safety seat in the BACK SEAT of a vehicle. Children under 2 years of age must ride in a rear-facing car seat in the back seat. Children who are at least 8 years old or 4 feet 9 inches tall should continue to ride in the back seat in either a safety seat, such as a booster seat, or lap/shoulder belt. Children should be kept in an appropriate child seat until they reach the upper height and weight recommended by the car seat manufacturer. DRIVERS are responsible for ensuring that children and adults in their car are safely secured in the correct safety seat or seat belt on every ride, every time. ###
Today is #NationalPoliceWomanDay! We salute all the female law enforcement officers, deputies, and troopers. Thank you for your dedication and professionalism. A special thank you to our female California Highway Patrol officers & support staff. 💙
Excerpt from Tessa Robinson, Managing Editor for We Are The Mighty: We all remember exactly where we were when we heard the news of a terrorist attack on that beautiful, clear Tuesday morning in September. But what I can't remember is the night before. I don't remember September 10, 2001. Who I called. What I said. How I spoke to or treated the people I love the most. I can't remember how I felt that night, or how I made others feel. While the rest of the world will remember 9/11 - as we all should - I seem to always spend more time reflecting about 9/10. I'll spend today and tonight in deep reflection -- hoping that the mommies made time for one more story, the daddies had patience for one more hug. I pray that couples went to sleep holding hands instead of onto arguments or petty fights. I'll hope that friends found words of forgiveness and that the children too busy to call their parents made time. Today, I think of the hundreds of people who packed suitcases, briefcases, even diaper bags thinking that "tomorrow" would be just another day. Today, I'll spend a little extra time practicing gratitude, being intentional with my children and offering more words of support, tenderness and empathy. I hope you'll join me. In a time of such great divisiveness of our country, let us take today to remember that we are better United. We are stronger as humans, as brothers and sisters, and as Americans, when we can find tolerance, kindness, mercy and love. Let the heroes of 9/11 -- and their unfinished stories on 9/10 -- remind us that tomorrow is never "just another day."
