Spotty Showers & Afternoon Thunderstorm Potential Across the Region 🌦️⚡

Good morning, Bay Area and Central Coast! Mid-to-high level moisture overhead is bringing dynamic weather across Northern and Central California today.

What to expect through this afternoon:

Rain Showers & Sprinkles: A slight chance of light rain showers or isolated sprinkles exists region-wide through the afternoon. Measurable accumulation will be spotty, with many areas seeing elevated virga (rain evaporating before hitting the ground).

Thunderstorm Risk: The greatest potential for thunderstorm activity will be focused across the Central Coast (especially interior Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito counties).

Potential Hazards: Any thunderstorms that develop could produce cloud-to-ground lightning, localized gusty winds, and brief downpours.

If you have outdoor plans on the Central Coast today, keep an eye on the sky and remember: When thunder roars, go indoors! 🌩️

Red Flag Warning in effect from 5am Friday to 3pm Friday with isolated lightning strikes. Gusty outflow winds of 40 to 50mph with the strongest storms. Most likely area for thunderstorm activity across Central Coast and Santa Cruz Mountains. Be sure your emergency kit is ready and listen to local officials for any evacuation instructions.

Morning Cloud Update & Satellite Smoke Tracking 🌫️💨

Good late morning, Bay Area and Central Coast! Marine stratus has steadily retreated to the immediate coastline as of late morning, opening up sunny skies across interior valleys.

What we are tracking on satellite:

Fire Activity & Smoke Drift: Visible satellite imagery clearly captures light smoke plumes aloft drifting northeastward from active fires along the Big Sur coast—specifically the ongoing and the newly developed .

Air Quality & Sky Conditions: The smoke is currently elevated aloft, which may create a hazy or milky look to the sky across portions of the Central Coast and Bay Area today.

Morning Low Clouds Clearing Inland; High Clouds Streaming Overhead 🌫️🌤️

Good morning, Bay Area and Central Coast! Marine stratus that pushed into coastal valleys overnight is clearing back toward the immediate coast right on schedule.

What to expect today:

Stratus Retreat: Low clouds and fog are burning off in inland valleys and along the bayshore, returning to the immediate Pacific coastline by early afternoon.

Passing High Clouds: A band of wispy, high-altitude clouds is streaming across Northern and Central California, filtering sunshine overhead.

Afternoon Outlook: Mostly sunny and pleasant conditions will prevail across the interior, while coastal areas remain cooler under lingering stratus.

Smoke from the Timber Fire will continue to drift northeastward into the Carmel and Salinas valleys throughout the day. ...

Smoke from the Timber Fire will continue to drift northeastward into the Carmel and Salinas valleys throughout the day. Overnight, the plume will begin to shift southward towards the ocean. A snapshot of an ALERTCalifornia camera features the current smoke and haze conditions in Carmel Valley.
