As America marks 250 years of independence this Fourth of July, we're looking back at a chapter of Army history that helped shape the Monterey Peninsula.|

Before tanks and trucks, Fort Ord was home to a horse-powered Army, where cavalry troops, field artillery and Army veterinarians trained alongside hundreds of horses and mules. Among the stories is that of Sgt. Allan MacDonald and his horse, Comanche, whose legacy remains an enduring part of local Army history.
