Today we remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend — it’s a reminder that freedom has always come at a cost carried by brave individuals and the families who loved them.

May we honor their sacrifice not only with words, but by living with gratitude, compassion, and purpose.

To the fallen heroes: thank you. We remember you today and always. 🇺🇸

Today our dispatchers were shown a small token of appreciation with T-shirts from the office, thoughtful goodie bags from our Region 6 VDEM team, and delicious cookies and a cake from Highland EMS—but no gesture can truly match the dedication they bring to this job every single day.

We also had the honor of recognizing Krystal Colaw for her 5—almost 6—years of service. Her commitment, professionalism, and steady presence behind the headset have made a lasting impact on this office and the community we serve.

To all of our dispatchers: thank you for your sacrifice, your strength, and your unwavering dedication. You are truly the backbone of what we do, and we are incredibly proud and grateful for each and every one of you.

🚨 PUBLIC SAFETY UPDATE 🚨

Beginning April 28, 2026, the Bath County Sheriff's Office and the Highland County Sheriff's Office will transition to encrypted radio frequencies as part of major communications upgrades.

🧐 What is P25?

P25 is a modern public safety radio system that allows different agencies and equipment (even from different manufacturers) to communicate with each other clearly, reliably, and securely. This ensures seamless
coordination when every second matters.

🤷Why this matters:

✅Officer Safety
Reliable communication is critical when deputies are in the field and need
immediate assistance.

✅Improved Coverage
The upgraded system reduces "dead zones" and coverage gaps, providing
stronger radio service throughout our counties.

✅Secure Communication
Encryption helps protect sensitive law enforcement information from
outside monitoring.

✅Better Coordination
Deputies will have clearer communication with dispatch centers and
improved interoperability with neighboring agencies, including partners in West Virginia.

These upgrades provide our deputies with the tools, protection, and confidence they need to serve our communities safely and effectively.
Thank you for your continued support as we work to improve public safety for everyone.

This week is Dispatchers Week, and here at the Highland County Sheriff’s Office, we would like to take a moment to recognize and thank each and every one of our dispatchers. Though they are rarely seen, they are always heard—the calm voice on the other end of the line during someone’s worst moment.

Day in and day out, our dispatchers serve as the lifeline between our community and first responders. Their dedication, patience, and professionalism do not go unnoticed. They handle every call with compassion and strength, often in high-stress situations, all while working behind the scenes.

We are truly grateful for everything you do and the critical role you play in keeping our community safe. Thank you for your service.
