Today, we bid farewell to Seaman (SN) Tibbets as she embarks on her journey to A School to train as a Public Affairs Specialist. In her role, SN Tibbets has been our social media liaison, managing all our Facebook posts and enhancing our outreach.

During her time with us, she has proven herself as a qualified watch stander, responding to calls from distressed vessels and representing our unit with professionalism. Additionally, as a qualified boat crew member, she has actively participated in responses to those in need at sea.

Fair winds and following seas, Station Monterey will miss you!

17 July 2024, On a sunny Wednesday morning, LT Matthew Peryea was relieved by LT Bartholomew Sullivan as Commanding Officer of U.S. Coast Guard Station Monterey in the presence of distinguished guests of the community, surrounding military installations, partner law enforcement and search and rescue organizations, friends, and family. This formal Change of Command ceremony was presided over by CAPT Jordan Baldueza, Commander U. S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. LT Peryea would like to thank his family, the crew, and all of the partnerships that allowed him to have a successful tour. We wish both the best of luck in their endeavors, especially LT Sullivan and family as we welcome him to Monterey. (This is a preview of the day; a video of the ceremony will be posted in the future.)

This morning the station was extremely quiet while the crew slept in following an early morning Search and Rescue Case; BM3 Lawrence's first case as a certified coxswain! The sun coming through the windows in admin and the smell of coffee is a core memory for many that crossed the decks of Station Monterey.

Sunday morning Coffee - we formally recognized the crew of the 47321 from the June 10th vessel fire case. BM3 Pena, the coxswain, earned a Letter of Commendation - and crew was recognized at quarters this past week. A multi-faceted multi-agency response that saved 5 lives, prevented the total loss of the vessel, and prevented 600 gallons of diesel and debris from entering the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and beaches of the Salinas River National Wildlife Refuge. Bravo Zulu !

Today we said farewell to Fireman Wiese, being an outstanding member of the crew since August 2021. In addition to earning a Commandant's Letter of Commendation for his many accomplishments, we were thrilled to let him know that the crew chose him as our Sailor of the Quarter for his dedication and hard work. We will miss his enthusiastic work ethic and outgoing personality that earned him the affectionate title of the 'Mayor of Monterey' as he departs for Public Affairs Specialist "A" School!

Busy 4th of July weekend - In case you missed us, members of the Station participated in City of Monterey - Government annual fourth of July parade on Thursday, we love the opportunity to connect with the community! We had a busy weekend of operations and training but believe it or not - not a single fireworks related flare case- which kept us ready to respond for a number of water rescues. It's hot out folks, enjoy the beach, but remember the ocean remains cold - never turn your back on the sea.

Community outreach is important to us at Station Monterey, not only are we stationed here but we live here too. During the 2023-2024 school year, our crew volunteered over 250 hours towards our Partnership in Education (PIE) program. These volunteers took time out of their days to help out teachers and positively engage with almost 1,900 students at local elementary and middle schools - in the classroom and on the playground. We loved having the opportunity to interact with the next generation and look forward to next school year.

All this past week the crew has been participating in our tri-annual Operational Assessment of Readiness inspection. That is a floor to ceiling look at our unit operating policies, training programs, Rescue and Survival gear, and the engineering condition of the boats. The crew knocked it out of the park- including a clean sweep on underway drills! Thanks to the east coast OARS inspection team from Yorktown, it was great having you onboard and be able to showcase what the crew can do. On Wednesday, we had a heartfelt 'see you later' for BMC Terry. BMC called Monterey home for 4 years and was the glue that often held the unit together on the day to day. He trained 6 heavy weather coxswains to operate our motor lifeboats in up to 20 ft seas and 50 kt winds among the countless crew he trained in other positions and was 1 of only 2 heavy weather coxswain's standing port and starboard duty for 2 entire winter seasons - safeguarding the Central California region and responding to many Search and Rescue cases. He earned the Advanced Boat Forces Insignia and the U.S. Coast Guard Commendation Medal for his hard work and contributions to the unit, crew, and mariners in the region. He will be missed but we wish him the best of luck as he ventures to the warm waters of Pensacola, FL as the Executive Petty Officer! Thank you Chief for always being that steady hand on the throttles.
