World Ocean Day catalyzes collective action for a healthy ocean and a stable climate. Today we take the time to acknowledge the spectacular power and prominence of the ocean.. The ocean regulates climate, produces over half of the world's oxygen, sustains the world's largest ecosystem, and powers local and global economies. The City of Monterey's history is innately tied to its relationship with the ocean, from the indigenous people to the European explorers to the today's fisherman, whale watching boats, and scuba divers. A healthy marine ecosystem is vital for the City's economy and the well-being of our residents and visitors. This , let’s stand together for a thriving ocean and a healthier future for our planet.

The 2026 theme is 'Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet'. The City of Monterey is home to the Edward F. Ricketts State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) that stretches from the Monterey Coast Guard Jetty to the western edge of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The water in this SMCA reaches about 70 feet deep and is characterized by sandy beaches, rocky shore, kelp habitats. Along with human use, this area is home is marine mammals, birds, fish, and plants.

While we take time today to celebrate World Ocean Day, every day in the City of Monterey and on the Monterey Peninsula is ocean day.

An official launch day change due to weather conditions is being reported. Once the official start date and time are confirmed, please come out and cheer them on at Monterey's Monterey Old Fisherman's Wharf!

📣 NEW RACE START WINDOW

Due to weather we have made the decision to postpone the race start window to between Sunday 7th and Wednesday 10th June, with an aimed for race start time currently set for 06:00AM PST on Tuesday June 9th.

Race Director Carsten Heron Olsen states:
“Safety is paramount. Teams have signed up for the World's Toughest Row and they will get exactly that. Our job is not to remove the challenge, but to give crews the best possible start by allowing them to clear the coastline and establish themselves offshore before taking on whatever Mother Nature decides to throw at them.”

Construction on the North Fremont Street Road Rehab Project is scheduled to start on Monday, June 8, 2026. This project consists of rehabilitating the roadway through a full depth reclamation process of the asphalt pavement in between Casanova Ave and the City limit (near Canyon Del Rey Blvd). One side of travel lanes will close at a time - northside (toward Monterey) and southside (toward Seaside). One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction by rerouting traffic to the other side (i.e. when the northside is closed traffic will be rerouted so there is one lane in each direction on the southside). The work will occur overnight to reduce the traffic impact. The project is scheduled to be completed in four weeks. This is a Measure P and S project. We thank the community for your patience and understanding while we complete this important infrastructure upgrade. monterey.gov/construction
