Judges are often deeply committed to the work they do. Public trust in the courts is at a historically low level and we need strong leaders in our courts to prove to the public that the public can trust our courts to operate as a co-equal but separate branch of government focused on justice and ruling without bias or undue influence.

I was honored to attend Speak Up for Justice, Washington! at the Grays Harbor County Courthouse today. The event was a meaningful reminder that the rule of law and an independent judiciary are essential to our democracy and continued self-government. Protecting judges and our courts protects access to justice for everyone. Grays Harbor County is strengthened by a community that values civic trust, fair courts, and the rule of law.

Judge Valentine is committed to fairness in the court and doesn’t assume it’s there. She looks for opportunities to improve and encourages honest feedback.

Behind the bench earlier this year we asked for feedback on how people feel in front of the bench. We were one of five courts to volunteer for this project so that we could learn what we were doing well and what we could improve in our court. This project was a combined effort with the Center for Justice Innovation and Washington’s District and Municipal Court Judges Association.
