Our mission is to build an Alabama that puts people and communities first. Hometown Action is building a multi-racial, working-class, trans/q***r-affirming movement for racial, gender, economic, and climate justice in small-town and rural communities in Alabama and across the South. To get there, we need a mass movement of rural Southern people! Southern rural communities are on the frontlines of
the most pressing challenges facing our country from increasing climate disasters, the spread of rightwing extremism, and the erosion of our civic infrastructure. An effective organizing strategy that advances racial, gender, economic, and climate justice requires a multiracial organizing approach rooted in rural and Southern communities. Hometown Action is organizing across the intersections of race, class, gender, geography, and political ideology. We are centering and uplifting the leadership of Black and other People of Color, especially women; trans, q***r, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming people; students and young people; and working-class rural and small town Alabamians. By bringing together diverse groups of people, building lasting relationships grounded in trust, and politicizing people’s lived experiences, we are growing a movement that creates a better future for all Alabamians. Through strategic power-building, we’re taking on the biggest issues facing rural communities and the country–ending attacks on reproductive freedom and LGBTQ people; responding to the impacts of the climate crisis while also building communities that are more resilient in the face of future disasters; and curbing the rise of authoritarianism by rebuilding robust civic and social infrastructure in rural areas. Our work is a starting point to create a future that builds connection, hope, and excites the radical imagination of rural Southern communities. By building lasting relationships grounded in trust and developing local leaders, we can build a better future for all Alabamians.
