This week, let’s not just focus on the mission but focus on the people. Who are you helping improve this short holiday week?
A good objective of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and to help those who are doing well to do even better.
I discovered something powerful about leadership: it's not about making yourself look good. It's about making others better.
When I started in business, I thought leadership was about being the smartest person in the room, having all the answers, getting all the credit. But my mentor showed me something different. He showed me that the best leaders are the ones who develop other leaders.
I remember working with people who were struggling—maybe their sales were down, maybe they lacked confidence, maybe they just needed someone to believe in them. As a leader, my job wasn't to do their work for them. It was to help them discover their own capability.
But here's what many people miss: great leadership isn't just about helping struggling people. It's also about helping successful people become even more successful. Don't neglect your top performers. They need leadership too—just different leadership.
Your struggling team members need encouragement and fundamentals. Your high performers need challenges and new opportunities to grow. Both need your attention.
I've seen leaders who only focus on fixing problems and ignore their star players. Those star players eventually leave. I've also seen leaders who only reward the winners and abandon those who are struggling. Those struggling people never develop.
The art of leadership is helping everyone rise to their next level—whatever that level may be.
This week we're exploring Leadership & Service. True servant leadership means serving both those who need a hand up AND those who are ready to reach even higher.
Who in your circle needs your leadership investment right now?
