Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. believed in the power of people working together to strengthen their communities.

This January, HandsOn River Region wants to put that spirit into action — and we need our community partners to help us identify where volunteers can make a difference.

We are now accepting projects for the 2027 MLK Weekend of Service, January 16–18, 2027.

If your nonprofit, school, public agency, faith-based organization, or community group has a project you've been hoping to tackle, tell us about it.

Maybe you need a few extra hands. Maybe you need a whole team. Maybe you know what needs to be done but aren't quite sure how to turn it into a volunteer project.

That's okay.

No project is too big or too small.

Anyone in the community needing reprieve from the heat are welcome! Community members wanting to know how they can help??? We will gladly accept bottled water, electrolyte drinks, and individually wrapped snack items.

A father called 2-1-1 seeking urgent help for himself and his 8-year-old son. They needed food, shelter, and basic essentials after facing an overwhelming series of challenges.

Through HandsOn River Region 2-1-1, food was provided the same day through Mercy House, and additional resources were shared for hygiene items, personal needs, and temporary housing.

With support and guidance from his 2-1-1 Resource Specialist, he updated his TANF and SNAP applications, enrolled his son in Montgomery Public Schools, connected with afterschool childcare resources, and attended a Back-to-School Resource Event for supplies.

During our last follow-up, he shared exciting news: he was interviewing for a job.

One call to 2-1-1 helped connect this father and son to immediate support, practical next steps, and hope for a fresh start.

A woman contacted 2-1-1 seeking help with clothing for her family after experiencing financial difficulties.

Through a referral from 2-1-1, she connected with The Caring Center and received clothing assistance to help meet her family’s immediate needs.

During the call, she also learned about the A-RESET program, which supports individuals in building job skills and preparing for employment. Motivated to improve her situation, she enrolled in the program.

What began as a call for clothing assistance became an important step toward greater stability and self-sufficiency for her family.

One call helped connect her family to immediate support and long-term opportunity.

🌟 Use Your Leadership to Strengthen the River Region

HandsOn River Region is seeking committed, action-oriented community leaders to join our Board of Directors.

Our Board helps guide programs that connect people with essential resources, meaningful volunteer opportunities, and solutions that strengthen our community—including 2-1-1, volunteer engagement, and homelessness-response initiatives.

Board service with HandsOn River Region is an active leadership role. We are looking for individuals who are ready to:

✅ Participate consistently in Board meetings and committee work
✅ Serve as ambassadors for our mission
✅ Build relationships and open doors within the community
✅ Support fundraising, sponsorship development, and donor engagement
✅ Personally invest in the organization at a level that is meaningful to them
✅ Contribute their professional experience, ideas, and connections

Prior board experience is welcome but not required. What matters most is a genuine commitment to our mission and a willingness to actively serve.

📣 We’re accepting applications for Fall 2026 Social Services Internships!

HandsOn River Region is seeking undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students pursuing social work, psychology, human services, counseling, sociology, public health, or another related field.

Interns will gain supervised, hands-on experience supporting our 2-1-1 Information and Referral and Coordinated Entry operations. Opportunities may include community-resource navigation, housing-focused triage, referral follow-up, resource-database updates, data quality, program evaluation, and community engagement.

📍 Montgomery, Alabama
🕒 Approximately 12–20 hours per week
🏢 Primarily in person
🎓 Academic credit may be supported with university approval

Assignments will be tailored to each student’s academic level, experience, learning goals, and university placement requirements.
