As we begin the last week of April, which Governor Kay Ivey proclaimed as the Month of the Military Child during a ceremony at the Alabama Capitol on April 16, 2026, we would like to honor the courage of children in military families.

Members of the Alabama National Guard Child & Youth Services joined the Governor alongside ALNG Director of Resilience Col. Todd Wheeler and State Military Department Deputy Director of External Affairs and Strategic Communication Casey Rogers to recognize the strength, resilience, and sacrifices of military children across the state.

Big news for the Alabama National Guard!

Three key legislative priorities supporting Soldiers, Airmen, and mission readiness across Alabama passed this session. These measures strengthen legal authorities, improve recognition programs, and expand education benefits for members of the Alabama National Guard.

House Bill 233 strengthens the Alabama National Guard Education Assistance Program by authorizing tuition assistance for workforce development programs, allowing assistance payments earlier in the academic term, and establishing joint administration between the State Military Department and the Alabama Commission on Higher Education. These updates improve access to education and support recruitment and retention across the force.

House Bill 323 updates Alabama National Guard awards, medals, and ribbons by revising eligibility requirements and establishing new awards for certain accomplishments and service. The legislation also clarifies presentation authority between the Governor and the Adjutant General, ensuring consistent and meaningful recognition for Soldiers and Airmen.

House Bill 362 clarifies roles and responsibilities within the Alabama National Guard legal framework and strengthens authorities for the State Military Department’s Legal Services.

These legislative priorities represent a continued investment in the people, readiness, and future of the Alabama National Guard.

We would like to especially thank our sponsors Senator Andrew Jones and Representative Oliver, Senator Josh Carnley and Representative Parker Moore, and Senator Sam Givhan and Representative David Faulkner for their leadership and support in passing these important measures.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐋𝐍𝐆 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦:

To the Soldiers, Airmen, Civilians, and Families of the Alabama National Guard,

This past week has been one of the most difficult in recent memory, and without question, the most difficult since I assumed the duties as your Adjutant General.

On 12 March 2026, we lost six Airmen aboard a KC-135, Zeus 95, while supporting OPERATION EPIC FURY. Three of those Airmen served in the 99th Air Refueling Squadron and were our trusted teammates who flew, trained, and served alongside the 117th Air Refueling Wing. Their loss is deeply felt across our formation and within our Alabama Air National Guard family.

As we returned home from Dover Air Force Base after witnessing the dignified transfer of our fallen heroes, we reflected on the weight of that moment. Standing alongside their families, parents, siblings, and children, there were no right words. There is only presence, shared grief, and an enduring commitment that their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

These Airmen were our teammates, our friends, and our family. In the midst of this loss, we will take care of those they loved, and we will take care of each other. That is our responsibility, and our promise. Even in grief, the mission does not pause, and neither do we. Over the past several days, our force has remained engaged, continuing operations at home and abroad. We move forward, carrying their legacy with us, honoring them in the way we continue to show up, the way we serve, and the way we lead.

We will continue our mission in their honor. We will remain vigilant, disciplined, and focused as we press forward with commitment and resolve. As part of that vigilance, we also ask each of you to stay alert, trust your instincts, and do not hesitate to report anything that does not seem right. While there are no specific risks to our homeland, we must remain mindful that isolated threats can still emerge. Taking care of one another includes maintaining awareness and ensuring the safety of our communities. What we do matters, and it will continue to matter because of the standard they helped set.

We are no stranger to challenging times. What sustains us is our faith, our purpose, and the strength of our people. When we stand united and steady together, our resilience grows stronger, and our ability to endure and move forward becomes unshakable. Take time to check on one another and take care of your families at home. Lean on one another. That is how we move through moments like this – together.

We take great pride in leading and serving alongside the most committed and talented force in our nation, Alabama’s Soldiers and Airmen. Your service to our state and nation is exemplary, and we have full faith and confidence in each of you.

We will carry our fallen with us, always.

The prayers of Alabama’s force are with all who knew these heroes.
