Thank you, Zurg! Hello, Jello! 🐾

After six years of dedicated service, our pawsome Courthouse Facility Dog, Zurg, is retiring! The good news? Zurg is doing great and is simply ready to enjoy retirement and be a dog.

We are incredibly grateful for the love, comfort, and unconditional support he has given to crime victims and their families during some of their most difficult moments.

Zurg and Victim Services Officer Stephanie Minor have also been wonderful ambassadors for HERO – Alabama’s Courthouse Facility Dog Program, connecting with our community and helping raise awareness about the important work these dogs do.

While she has some big paws to fill, we’re excited to welcome Jello! She’ll be working alongside Stephanie to support victims of abuse and neglect and help them feel safe, supported, and never alone.

We’ll miss Zurg so much, but we can’t wait to see all the wonderful things Jello will do!

Thank you for everything, Zurg. Enjoy retirement!

NEWS FROM THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE: A woman charged with manslaughter in the 2024 shooting death of her cousin has been found guilty by a Montgomery County jury, District Attorney Azzie Oliver announced. Natasha McDade was working as a cashier at Circle K in the 4000 block of Troy Highway when she was fatally shot by Kawanda McDade.

According to surveillance video and witness testimony presented at trial, Kawanda McDade entered the store to purchase a cup of ice. After leaving, she returned and became involved in a verbal altercation with her cousin. The confrontation continued outside, where Kawanda McDade shoved Natasha McDade before pulling a gun from her purse and shooting her in the chest.

Kawanda McDade testified that she acted in self-defense and had sustained minor bruises during the altercation. The jury rejected that claim and returned a guilty verdict. She is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Monet Gaines in October. She faces 10 to 20 years in prison.

District Attorney Azzie Oliver said, “Natasha McDade’s life was taken far too soon, leaving behind loved ones who will carry this loss with them forever. While no verdict can undo the pain of losing someone you love, our prosecutors and investigators worked diligently to ensure that justice was pursued for Natasha McDade and her family. I hope this verdict brings them some measure of closure.”

DA Oliver commended Deputy District Attorneys Charlie Hawthorne and Austin Crowley for their work in prosecuting the case. She also recognized Montgomery Police Department Detective J. Smith, the lead investigator; Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office Investigators T.D. James and Deandre Holley; Victim Services Officer Xzaiver Webb; and Legal Support Assistant Madi Putz for their efforts and support throughout the case.

Montgomery County District Attorney Azzie Oliver was honored to serve as the featured speaker at Old Ship AME Zion Church’s annual Men & Women’s Day program, centered on the theme of walking in our calling.

During her remarks, DA Oliver spoke about how each of us is called to serve a purpose, even though our experiences, gifts, and roles may differ. She emphasized that we all have something meaningful to contribute and a responsibility to leave the world better than we found it.

DA Oliver expressed her sincere gratitude to Rev. Dr. Kathy Thomas McFadden, the Old Ship AME Zion Church family, and all of the guests for their warm welcome and for the opportunity to reflect on the importance of embracing our individual callings.

ICYMI: Domestic violence doesn’t always begin with physical violence. It can start with control — over finances, friendships, family, or other parts of a person’s life. One Place Family Justice Center Executive Director Dr. Bonnie Sullivan and Victim Services Director Jaleesa Albadani recently discussed the importance of recognizing unhealthy relationship patterns early, teaching young people that violence isn’t the answer, and learning how to de-escalate conflict. The students were engaged and eager to learn as DA Oliver shared insights about pursuing a career in law and offered valuable tips for success in their future endeavors. ICYMI: Every day in the classroom counts — especially in third grade, when students make the important transition from learning to read to reading to learn.

On the latest edition of "Mondays with the District Attorney," DA Azzie Oliver and Alabama National Fair Executive Director Randy Stephenson discussed the “Every Day Counts: Attendance = Success” recognition program. Our office is teaming up with the fair once again to celebrate students who make attendance a priority.

Montgomery Public Schools third graders who have zero unexcused absences during Student Attendance Awareness Month will be rewarded with an admission ticket to the Oct. 12 School Day at the fair!

Every day missed is a day of learning missed — and consistent attendance can make a lasting difference.
