Chapter president Katrina Skinner, MD, FAAP, said, “The Omicron variant of COVID-19 is extremely contagious and fast-spreading. Pediatric hospitalizations are at record high numbers, and we continue to see children with serious complications of COVID-19 infections such as MIS-C. Parents should take the current COVID-19 outbreak seriously as it poses a very real threat to the health and well-being of their children. Children depend on their parents to protect them by minimizing their exposure to high-risk settings, to teach good masking practices and other preventive measures, as well as getting them vaccinated if eligible.”

Hospitalizations of children in Alabama due to COVID-19 are at a record high, and immediate measures need to be taken to reduce COVID-19 in the pediatric population. Read our full news release at go.usa.gov/xtDUC.

Former Chapter president and current District Medical Officer Dr. Wes Stubblefield said, "As pediatricians, we understand the extreme stress this pandemic is placing on families. Our best medical advice is for parents to vaccinate their age-eligible children in order to protect their children's health and keep kids in school.”

ADPH advises K-12 school students, faculty and staff to follow updated COVID-19 isolation guidance from the CDC. Read our full news release at go.usa.gov/xtC6N.

Schools K-12 | Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH)

Recently, the CDC updated its quarantine and isolation guidelines for the general public that allows for shorter time periods in certain situations. However, these data are heavily dependent on masking protocols and have not yet been specifically considered for the K-12 setting, or in other congregate environments.

Therefore:

The recommendations contained in the Back to School Guidance 2021-2022 document published by the Alabama Department of Public Health remain unchanged.

This page contains information and guidance for parents, educators and administrators regarding opening schools during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Covid-19, RSV, and Flu- The triple threat your child could face this fall and winter

Chapter president, Katrina Skinner, MD, FAAP, of Fairhope Pediatrics, shares about the the triple threat of COVID-19, flu and RSV this fall and why all may be hitting all at once.

"When masking went away, people were being a little more lax in their social distancing efforts. Then RSV realized it had this whole population that didn't have this immunity so the virus has this heyday infecting all the little kids at daycare and in turn the adults got infected as well."

"RSV is something that i personally have never seen in the summer, and we're literally seeing a ton of it,” says Dr. Rick Place. Place is the pediatric medical director of an emergency department in Fairfax, Virginia, and says his hospital, much like Children's National in DC -- is seeing an u...

#12DaysofStories Day 2 Katrina Skinner, MD, FAAP, of Fairhope Pediatrics, currently serving as Alabama Chapter-American Academy of Pediatrics president, has participated as a Reach Out and Read-Alabama medical provider since 2010. "Snuggling on the couch. Reading together. Playing games like peek-a-boo that stimulate the mind and imagination. Giving a hug. Big or small, these everyday connections have the potential to positively impact the development of a child’s brain and as a result, impact his or her health, happiness and ability to learn. These early connections of a child’s life matter – and their impact can last a lifetime. By changing the way families interact together daily, Reach Out and Read-Alabama helps build powerful, lasting connections. And, we, as pediatricians, know these connections matter!"
