We were thrilled to be part of the Alabama Public Health(ADPH) Newborn Screening Conference last week at the Montgomery Marriott Prattville Hotel & Conference Center at Capitol Hill

A huge shoutout to Dr. Amy Williamson from Children's Rehabilitation Service (CRS) for her vital role as a speaker, sharing crucial updates on the Newborn Hearing Screening 1-3-6 Benchmarks alongside Mary Ellen Whigham, R.N.

Also, many thanks to everyone who stopped by and said hello to Dawn Bowles from Early Intervention. She hosted our resource table packed with helpful brochures and information for both of our Alabama Department of Rehabilitation (ADRS) programs: Early Intervention (EI) and Children's Rehabilitation Service (CRS).

Today, officials with the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS), Alabama Community College System, Calhoun Community College and Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs cut the ribbon on Alabama’s 5th Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Center!

Located at Calhoun Community College, this new center offers free specialized services to Veterans, National Guard members, and individuals living with TBI.

Services provided include:

• Screenings and referrals

• Peer mentorship

• Care coordination

• TBI Helpline & Resource Facilitation

The TBI Centers of Alabama initiative was made possible by Governor Kay Ivey, the Alabama Legislature and the State Veterans Mental Health Steering Committee. It is coordinated through the ADRS, the lead agency for disability services, including the State TBI Program.

Other locations: Mobile, Opelika, Enterprise, and Birmingham.

Occupational therapy plays a vital role in helping children gain independence in their daily lives. For four-year-old Joshelyn "Josh" Lathem of Hayden, Alabama, the occupational therapy team at Gadsden Children’s Rehabilitation Service (CRS) provides the specialized tools, adaptive strategies, and therapeutic support she needs to overcome daily mobility and functional challenges.

A new door is opening for Birmingham’s TBI community.

ADRS celebrated the TBI Center of Alabama Jefferson State with an open house.

For individuals and families living with traumatic brain injuries, finding the right resources and knowing where to turn can make a meaningful difference. ADRS’s TBI program provides screening, information and referral, resource facilitation, education, care coordination and other supports based on individual needs.

The Birmingham center is part of a growing network of TBI Centers across Alabama designed to strengthen access to services and community support.
