The Montgomery Police Department was established in 1820 as the primary law enforcement body for the City of Montgomery. The Montgomery Police Department is currently allocated 524 sworn officers and 200 civilian employees. The Montgomery Police Department serves a population of 202,000 citizens of Montgomery as well as 150,000 others who travel to or through the city on a daily basis. MPD's role is to enforce laws in a fair and impartial manner, recognizing both the statutory and judicial limitations of police authority and the constitutional rights of all persons. It is not the role of the department to legislate, to render legal judgments, or to punish. The primary responsibility for upholding the law lies not with the police, but with the people. Since crime is a social phenomenon, crime prevention is the concern of every person living in society. Society employs full-time professional police officers to prevent crime, to deter it, and when that fails, to apprehend those who violate the law. Crime is a symptom of ills within society which is not the responsibility of the department to cure. The department is responsible, however, for interacting with the community to generate mutual understanding so that there may be public support for crime prevention. Community involvement is essential to facilitate a free flow of information between the public and the department, to assist in identification of problem areas, and to inform the public of crime statistics and trends. Additionally, knowledge of the community is necessary so that each employee may be instilled with a sense of concern for crime problems and law enforcement needs

Hidden keys are easily discovered. Remove them entirely.

The Montgomery Police Department has charged a suspect with the homicides of Undrea Willis, 25, and Nalyn Reeves, 19, who were fatally shot.

On Monday, August 31, 2026, at about 8:46 a.m., the Montgomery Police Department responded to a report of a subject shot in the 1800 block of Gibbs Circle. Officers located two adult female victims who sustained fatal injuries from gunshot wounds. Both victims were pronounced deceased at the scene.

MPD charged Tarus Giles, 20, with four counts of Capital Murder. He was booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility.

Please note: A criminal charge is an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A clarification regarding MPD crime reporting:

Recent reporting about the Montgomery Police Department’s crime-data submissions requires an important clarification.

MPD experienced an administrative backlog in submitting crime data to the state reporting system. This was not an issue with MPD’s internal crime records. Those records remained current, and the crime statistics reported publicly by MPD, Chief Graboys, Mayor Reed and the City of Montgomery were based on those complete records and were accurate.

Chief Graboys reported to the Alabama Justice Information Commission at a public hearing, in July, that the reporting issue was identified and corrected before the hearing. MPD dedicated additional personnel to the reporting function to ensure continued compliance, and the department’s reporting to the state is fully current today.

We take accurate reporting and transparency seriously. Just as importantly, we want residents to be clear that this administrative reporting issue did not affect the accuracy of the crime statistics reported to the public.
