CAVHCS encourages Veterans, caregivers and families to stay alert and prepared as dangerous heat is expected to impact central Alabama and west Georgia from Wednesday, July 8, through Saturday, July 11, 2026.
High temperatures and humidity can increase the risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke and dehydration, especially for older adults, individuals with chronic medical conditions, people without reliable cooling and anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Heat safety tips:
✅ Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
✅ Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day.
✅ Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas.
✅ Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and use sunscreen.
✅ Never leave children, older adults or pets unattended in parked vehicles.
✅ Check on neighbors, loved ones and those who may not have reliable air conditioning.
✅ Know the signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, headache, confusion, nausea, weakness, heavy sweating or hot, dry skin.
July also brings increased risk for severe summer weather, power outages and hurricane-season impacts. Veterans and families are encouraged to review emergency plans, identify shelter locations, check emergency supplies and monitor local weather alerts.
For the latest weather updates, follow your local National Weather Service office and local emergency management officials.
Stay hydrated. Stay weather aware. Stay prepared.
