Break for a Plate Alabama

Break for a Plate Alabama Break for a Plate Alabama represents all USDA food and nutrition programs administered by ALSDE. This is a reimbursement program based on meals served.

Break for a Plate is a federally-funded, state-administered program brought to you by the Alabama State Department of Education and the USDA. It reimburses providers who serve free, healthy meals to children and teens age 18 and younger during summer months when school is not in session. While many receive free and reduced meals during the school year, children need healthy food all year long. Pro

gram sites are deemed eligible based on USDA requirements as determined by the Alabama State Department of Education.

School districts can strengthen their financial stability under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) by strategically grouping schools to maximize Identified Student Percentage (ISP). By combining schools with higher ISPs alongside those with moderate participation levels, districts can raise their overall claiming percentage, resulting in greater federal reimbursement and reduced administrative burdens.

Thoughtful grouping ensures more students receive meals at no cost while allowing districts to operate sustainably. This approach not only improves access to nutritious meals but also supports long-term financial viability for child nutrition programs.
