This past year, Alabama counties invested nearly $1 billion in law enforcement services, ensuring sheriff’s departments and county jails had the resources necessary to serve their local communities. Revenue from the Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSUT) helps counties like ours maintain these services and continue meeting the public safety needs of our communities.

Looking ahead, protecting this revenue source will remain a top priority for county leaders as they work to support future investments in public safety and the services residents rely on each and every day.

County governments rely on a variety of revenue sources to provide essential services. In many Alabama counties, including ours, revenue from the Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSUT) is one of the few sources that continues to grow alongside rising costs.

Across Alabama, SSUT plays an important role in helping fund law enforcement services, including sheriff's departments and county jail operations. As public safety costs continue to increase, this revenue source helps counties meet one of our most significant responsibilities.

💡 DID YOU KNOW? Revenue from Alabama’s Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSUT) program plays a critical role in helping Autauga County fund essential public services—particularly public safety.

“SSUT allows revenue from online purchases to be put to work right here in Autauga County,” said Autauga County Commission Chairman Jay Thompson. “These dollars help us support the Sheriff’s Office, meet the growing costs of operating our county jail and provide the public safety services our residents count on.”

What was once largely uncollected revenue from online purchases now helps support sheriff’s departments, fund jail operations and offset the rising costs of providing public safety services across Alabama—and here at home.

County SSUT dollars:

âś… Support law enforcement services
âś… Provide critical funding for county jail operations
âś… Help manage rising public safety costs

Protecting this important revenue helps Autauga County continue investing in the safety and well-being of our residents.

“Our citizens count on law enforcement each and every day, and it’s our responsibility to ensure those services remain strong,” Madison County Commission Chairman Rex Vaughn said.

“Maintaining that level of service requires significant resources, and SSUT revenue helps ensure we can continue funding the deputies, equipment, jail operations and other critical functions that keep our communities safe.”

Madison County makes its case for protecting online sales tax revenue that funds vital public safety measures in Alabama.
