Here is a sneak of the pics we took on November 15, 2017 at the The City of St. Jude Interpretive Center and Garden. Mary Ware, a civil right activist of The City of St. Jude Catholic Parish spoke of her involvement in the civil rights movement. She was arrested at 18 years of age for not giving up her seat prior to Rosa Parks. Mary Ware was also one of five women plaintiffs in the federal civil suit, Browder v. Gayle leading to the end of segregation on buses here in Alabama and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Mary says, the main idea to take from the experience of it all, "young folk don't be afraid to stand for what you know is right, even when you do not know what the outcome of it all may be." God Bless!

The Selma to Montgomery March many felt overshadows the fact that, The City of St. Jude Parish is a religious institution, but in our opinion that is untrue, God worked through his church to extend to the marchers a place of rest when no one else would and it was very much befitting, as we are named after our patron St. Jude, "Saint of Difficult Causes and Helper of Cases Despaired of." God Bless us!!! Amen

On March 24, 1965, over 10,000 weary marchers reached Montgomery seeking voting rights. With no other public facility available to them, The City of St. Jude allowed them to rest on parish grounds, under the protection of St. Jude Thaddeus, patron saint of hopeless cases.

Later that night, a Stars for Freedom Rally was organized to encourage the marchers, featuring some of that era’s biggest entertainers. The next morning, the marchers (now around 25,000) completed their journey to the state capitol.

Visit our Interpretive Center and Garden to learn more about these events and St. Jude’s history. Hours are Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Call (334) 265-6791 to schedule your tour today!

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?" -Martin Luther King, Jr.

In March 1965, Martin Luther King, Jr. led 25,000 marchers from the campus of The City of St. Jude to the Alabama state capitol in what became known as the historic Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March. Today we join the nation in honoring his legacy. Happy MLK Day!
