Alabama Network of Children's Advocacy Centers, Inc. (ANCAC)

Alabama Network of Children's Advocacy Centers, Inc. (ANCAC) The Network promotes the multi-disciplinary process in fostering an abuse-free society for Alabama.

In 1986 the Alabama Legislature passed a bill designating the Huntsville location as a pilot child advocacy center program. This opened the door to Victims Of Crime Act funding for our first center. The Alabama Network of Children’s Advocacy Centers began as an informal organization with Bud Cramer as the first president of the organization. During the next decade, Alabama would establish 10 centers across the state and lead the nation in the development of child advocacy centers. The model, developed here in Alabama, has spread to more than 900 sites across the United States and several foreign countries. Legislation was passed in 1990 to fund seven full-member centers in Alabama. In 1992 House Bill 446 passed and the Alabama Network Standards became written law. Four years later, the Network was recognized as a State Chapter by The National Network of Children’s Advocacy Centers, which is now the National Children’s Alliance.

Meet Our Intern, Gabby!

We’re excited to welcome our newest intern to the Alabama Network of Children’s Advocacy Centers! She is currently pursuing her Master of Social Work at Auburn University, and we’re looking forward to having her learn, grow, and work alongside us this semester.

We asked her a few questions to help you get to know her!

What made you choose social work?
“I have a passion for helping people and connecting them with resources that can make a difference in their lives.”

What interested you in interning with ANCAC?
“I love children, and I want to be able to advocate for children who might not be able to advocate for themselves.”

What are you most excited to learn during your internship?
“I’m most excited to learn about the different policies that exist, especially the policies and laws that protect children.”

What area of social work are you most interested in right now?
“Medical social work and child welfare.”

Where do you see yourself after graduation?
“After graduation, I plan to become a licensed social worker and hope to find a job in Mobile, but I’m also open to different opportunities.”

What is something you wish more people understood about social work?
“I wish more people understood what social workers actually do. When people think of social work, they often think social workers just remove children from their homes, but there is so much more to the profession and the work social workers do.”

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?
“Reading a book, spending time with friends, and going on a long walk outside.”

What three words would your friends use to describe you?
“Fun, outgoing, and kind!”

We’re so glad to have her joining the ANCAC team the next 2 semesters and can’t wait to be part of her social work journey!

Last week, Children’s Advocacy Center leaders from across Alabama came together for our annual Executive Director Conference. It was a meaningful week focused on growth, connection, and taking time to recharge.

A special thanks to Southern Regional Children's Advocacy Center and Ebert Design for leading incredible sessions on intentional practice, meaningful engagement, and strengthening the work we do every day.

We’re grateful for the leaders who continue to move the CAC movement forward across Alabama and for the opportunity to learn, connect, and grow together.

We’re already looking forward to next year!

Kind? Absolutely. But also highly trained, highly skilled professionals.

Children’s Advocacy Center staff across Alabama are some of the most specialized nonprofit professionals in our state.

Working with children who have experienced abuse and trauma takes much more than a big heart. It requires extensive training and specialized knowledge in areas like child development, trauma, forensic interviewing, evidence-based mental health treatment, victim advocacy, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the complex systems that respond to child abuse.

Our forensic interviewers are trained to gather accurate information from children while minimizing suggestibility. Our therapists are trained in evidence-based treatments designed specifically for childhood trauma. Our advocates know how to support families navigating crisis, investigations, court proceedings, and recovery. Our MDT coordinators bring professionals from multiple agencies together to make sure the needs of the whole child are considered.

And the training doesn’t stop when they are hired. CAC professionals participate in ongoing education, peer review, consultation, and skill development throughout their careers.

The people doing this work are compassionate because compassion matters.

But they aren’t “just kind.” They are professionals. They are experts. They are skilled. And Alabama’s children deserve nothing less.

ANCAC is grateful to Alabama’s Congressional Delegation for their continued support of Children’s Advocacy Centers across our state. Together, we remain committed to finding sustainable solutions that strengthen the services available to Alabama’s children and families.

We look forward to continuing this important partnership as we work to ensure every child has access to the care, protection, and advocacy they deserve. After all, Alabama’s greatest resource is our children.

Alabama helped pioneer the Children's Advocacy Center model. Now, the services that help children heal from abuse and support investigations are facing significant funding challenges.

In this op-ed for al.com, Alabama Network of Children's Advocacy Centers, Inc. (ANCAC) Executive Director Lynn Scott explains why Congress must act to stabilize the Crime Victims Fund and protect access to critical services for children and families across Alabama and the nation.
