F. Scott Fitzgerald was a veteran and wrote the first draft of his first novel while stationed in Montgomery, Alabama.
Later Fitzgerald was a mentor to Andrew Turnbull- buying Turnbull his first gun, teaching him to shoot, to box, how to play football, as well as military history.

One of the facets the Fitzgerald Prize wishes to honor are veteran authors and their contribution to American storytelling. For continuing this tradition of mentoring and inspiring the next generation through wit and humor the Fitzgerald Museum is pleased to award Mr. Emerson.
