Fun fact: The American Goldfinch is one of North America’s most recognizable backyard birds. Males are especially striking in summer with their bright yellow plumage and black wings, while both males and females have a distinctive, cheerful song.

Today is James O’Connor’s last day as an intern with the Town of Montgomery Parks and Recreation Department!

We are sending James off to 10th grade with some incredible new songbird skills. In his final video, James takes on the challenge of giving us his best Sedge Wren impression! 🐦

Fun fact: The Sedge Wren is a small, secretive songbird known for its rapid, chattering song. It often hides among tall grasses and wetlands, so its distinct call may be the best way to know one is nearby.

💚 SO PROUD OF OUR PARKS INTERNS! 🌿🐸

As summer starts to wind down, we want to give a huge thank you to our incredible Parks & Recreation interns, Carter McKnight and James O’Connor!

Today is Carter’s last day with us, and James will wrap up his internship next week. We are going to miss the energy, creativity, humor, and fresh ideas they brought into the Parks office all summer long!

Over the past few months, Carter and James have been busy throughout our parks and behind the scenes. Just a few of their projects include:

🌳 Exploring and documenting our parks, trails, wetlands, and historic sites
🐸 Developing our Vernal Pool Stewardship & Education Project
🎨 Designing and building whimsical Álfhús-inspired woodland doors for our newest trail
🏛️ Photographing and documenting the Colden Mansion Ruins
🌼 Working in the Benedict Farm Park Community Garden
📱 Creating our “Meet the Town & Wildlife” video series — some of our most popular Parks posts yet!
📸 Creating photos, videos, educational materials, park information, and social media content
🗂️ Helping with park programs, events, records, and the everyday work that keeps Parks moving

And their latest project is one we can’t wait to share!

🍓🌿 OPENING SOON: BRAMBLEBERRY RIDGE TRAIL 🌿🍓

Carter and James have been helping bring some magic to our new Brambleberry Ridge Trail, including creating the little woodland doors pictured here, inspired by Icelandic Álfhús, or “elf houses.”

Brambleberry Ridge will be a roughly ½-mile woodland loop off the Walden–Wallkill Rail Trail overlooking a large vernal pool. The trail is being developed as a fun way for visitors to explore the woods while learning about vernal pools, amphibians, seasonal wetlands, and the wildlife that depends on these special habitats. 🐸🍃

These little doors are just the beginning of what we hope will make Brambleberry Ridge a special place for kids and adults to explore, discover, and learn.

Carter and James — thank you for an incredible summer! We are so proud of everything you accomplished, and Parks won’t be quite the same without your energy in the office. 💚

👋 Saying Goodbye to Parks Intern Carter!

Today is Carter’s last day as a Town of Montgomery Parks intern!

Carter and fellow intern James are the team behind our Meet the Town & Wildlife videos. Throughout the summer, they helped plan, film, and interview Town staff while bringing creativity and fun to the series.

For Carter’s farewell video, James conducts the interview while Carter gives us his best Rock Pigeon impression! 🐦

Thank you, Carter, for all your hard work this summer. We hope you had a great experience with the Parks Department. Good luck in 10th grade—we know you will do great!

🐦 Meet the Town & Wildlife!

Meet Ron Feller, a familiar face whose service to Montgomery spans more than 50 years! Ron has served as Town Supervisor, Councilman, Deputy Supervisor, and Parks and Recreation Director. He is also a U.S. Air Force veteran, longtime youth coach, community volunteer, and proud supporter of local parks and recreation.

After decades of public service, Ron is taking on a new challenge: giving us his best Northern Cardinal impression!

Fun fact: The Northern Cardinal is one of the few North American songbirds in which both males and females sing. Listen for their clear whistles in our parks, yards, and wooded areas throughout the year.
