The House of Representatives elected its Speaker today, Rep. Mac McCutcheon of Madison, Alabama. Rep. McCutcheon was nominated by and received a majority vote from the members of the majority caucus. Minority caucus members nominated Rep. John Knight, but lost to the super majority vote along party lines.

The House Black Caucus extends congratulations to Speaker McCutcheon on his election. We look forward to his leadership in uniting the members of the House around our shared mission to serve the people of the great state of Alabama.

Democrats in Congress staged a sit-in on the House floor, in support of meaningful debate and legislative action on gun control.

John Lewis revived Wednesday one of the most evocative forms of protest from the civil rights movement -- the sit-in -- to demand House Republicans move on gun control.

"We can’t claim to seek to improve the lives of every Alabamian without first creating opportunities for every community to be heard." - Governor Robert Bentley

Governor, we could not agree more.

Take a moment and read the op-ed released by Governor Bentley on the state's new Office of Minority Affairs. The Black Caucus worked with the Governor to establish this important office, and we are equally optimistic about its ability to ensure continued growth and reconciliation in Alabama.

Barriers are meant to be broken. We salute Muhammad Ali for fighting in and out of the ring to destroy injustice and advance the cause of civil rights. His legacy as "the greatest" athlete can only be triumphed by his legacy as a great American.
