Do Your Quality Assurance Documents Need Review?

Alabama CRNPs and CNMs: it’s a great time to check in on your Quality Assurance (QA) documents with the ABN. Keeping your QA files updated helps ensure the highest level of safe, professional practice. The upcoming license renewal period is the perfect reminder to review and update your QA documents. Mandy began her healthcare journey as a nursing assistant and worked her way through a variety of roles, including long-term care, hospital nursing, clinic practice, nursing leadership, surgical services, and maternal health coordination. A graduate of Shelton State, she has dedicated her career to serving patients in rural Alabama and currently works as a Clinical Specialist in a primary care clinic, where no two days are ever the same.
Nursing has always been her calling, and Mandy cannot imagine doing anything else. Although she never expected to serve on the Alabama Board of Nursing, she considers it an honor and has enjoyed learning more about the profession from a regulatory perspective. Mandy hopes others will consider serving if given the opportunity, and feels that the experience is rewarding, educational, and a chance to help shape the future of nursing in Alabama.

The clinic not only expands access to specialized palliative care services for patients and families in west Alabama but also provides nursing students with valuable hands-on experiences in therapeutic communication and compassionate care for individuals facing serious illness.
Throughout her career, nursing has provided opportunities to grow as a clinician, educator, leader, and advocate. From bedside care to policy engagement, Kristi values the profession's ability to offer lifelong learning and meaningful leadership opportunities at every stage. Her interest in nursing leadership and healthcare policy inspired her to serve on the Alabama Board of Nursing, where she has gained a deeper appreciation for the role of regulation in protecting the public and advancing the profession. Maintaining professional boundaries can sometimes be challenging, particularly in nursing where relationships with patients may develop over extended periods of care. Professional boundaries are essential to ensuring that the nurse-patient relationship remains therapeutic, focused on the patient’s needs, and grounded in trust. Because nurses often have access to sensitive personal and health information, it is important to remain mindful of interactions that could blur professional lines. Strong professional boundaries protect both patients and nurses while supporting safe, ethical, and effective care.

A message from Dr. Baker about her recent visit:

I had the pleasure of visiting the University of South Alabama College of Nursing faculty on June 30. Below is a picture of me and Dean Heather Hall touring their state-of-the art simulation center. During my visit I met with senior leadership and faculty and
had the opportunity to observe nurse practitioner students practicing central venous line insertion and suturing. USA has the largest prelicensure program in the state and maintains an impressive NCLEX pass rate. They offer a variety of BSN, MSN, and DNP programs
at two locations, as well as online program options. Their faculty are committed to student success and meeting the multi-faceted needs of underserved and rural communities across the gulf coast.

250 Years of America — And My Journey as an Internationally Educated Nurse 🇺🇸

In 1992, America was turning 216. I was a young immigrant stepping onto American soil for the first time in the Bronx, New York, carrying a suitcase, a dream, and a quiet promise to make this country proud of the choice it made in welcoming me.

My journey led me from the Bronx to Raleigh, North Carolina, and now to Birmingham, Alabama — each place shaping my path, strengthening my purpose, and deepening my commitment to serve.

Along the way, I grew from a bedside nurse to a critical care staff nurse, then into teaching, and now in Alabama, I serve in a regulatory nursing role and as a member of the ABN, promoting patient safety and advancing standards of care across the state.
Today, America turns 250 — its semiquincentennial. I am proud to celebrate this historic milestone alongside my fellow Americans and healthcare workers, honoring our shared commitment to care, service, and community.

And I’m still here — as a husband, a father of three incredible daughters who chase volleyballs across courts with the same determination I once carried across an ocean, and a nurse who has dedicated his career both at the bedside and through telehealth, caring for veterans and elders.

America gave me the room to grow — from a newcomer to a nurse, from a nurse to a leader, educator, and patient safety advocate, from an immigrant story to an American story. My daughters are living proof that this country’s promise renews itself in every generation it welcomes.

So today, as the red, white, and blue mark 250 years of history, my family and I celebrate not just America’s birthday — but the story America made possible for us.

From the Philippines to the Bronx, to Raleigh, to Birmingham. From 1992 to 2026. From immigrant to nurse, educator, regulator, and patient safety advocate — still grateful, still serving, still proud.
Happy 250th Birthday, America.
