Long before places like Arches, Canyonlands, Hovenweep, and Natural Bridges became national parks and monuments, Indigenous peoples had deep connections to these landscapes, connections that continue today.

These places remain culturally significant to traditionally associated Tribal Nations, carrying histories, traditions, knowledge, and relationships that extend across generations.

During National Park Week, we think it's important to make space for these stories and to remember that understanding these places also means listening to the people whose connections to them are living and ongoing.

There is always more to learn. đź’š

If you’d like to keep learning with us, here are a couple of places to start:

🎥 Rooted in the Land: Native Perspectives — a short National Park Service film featuring Native speakers sharing their own connections to the cultural landscape of Canyonlands National Park.

🏜️ Exploring Tribal Connections to Arches National Park — learn more about the relationships traditionally associated Tribal Nations have with the landscape and resources of Arches.

We’re also really glad to see this learning happening right here at our partner parks. This year, Natural Bridges and Hovenweep have hosted Indigenous poets, artists, and cultural presenters sharing their own work, knowledge, and perspectives with visitors — including programs supported with funding from CNHA.

Keep an eye on upcoming programs for more opportunities to listen and learn directly from the people sharing their own stories.

Cafe 6: Community Conversation

Join us for our next Cafe 6 with special guest speaker Tracie Yellowman Tso, candidate for Utah House District 69.

Tracie will be joining us to talk about Bears Ears, its cultural and historical significance, and what’s happening with the land and its future. This is an opportunity to learn, ask questions, share your thoughts, and have an open community discussion about an issue that matters deeply to Native communities and the broader Southwest.

Come listen. Come learn. Come ask questions.
Most importantly, come be part of the conversation.
