“It’s cheaper to educate than incarcerate”

In 1995, Monticello Police Chief Dan Norris envisioned a way to reduce juvenile crime in the Sanders Heights community of Monticello, Georgia. His vision, combined with the dedication of Detective Roberta Anderson, Lead Teacher Evelyn Davis, Counselor Patricia McJunkins, supportive staff, and the residents of Sanders Heights, turned that dream into a powerful reality — the Monticello Get Ahead House.

The program began in a modest one-bedroom unit at 33 Sanders Heights, serving only a handful of students. As enrollment quickly grew to nearly 50 students, the small space could no longer meet the needs of the expanding program. To accommodate the growth, classes and activities were held in multiple community locations, including the Monticello School System, St. James AME Church, the Jasper County Dance Studio, various private homes, and the Uncle Remus Library.

Today, the Monticello Get Ahead House operates from a newly constructed multi-purpose resource center located at 731 Funderburg Drive, Monticello, Georgia. The program now serves over 100 students and continues to uphold its founding mission — empowering youth through education, mentorship, and community support
