With 540 reported cases of measles across 36 counties in neighboring Pennsylvania, the Sullivan County Department of Public Health is closely and actively monitoring the spread of this contagious disease.

“Our Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance team maintains ongoing surveillance and is in regular communication with the NYS Department of Health regarding emerging risks, guidance, and any activity that may impact Sullivan County,” says Public Health Director Dr. Jessie Moore. “Our clinical and outreach teams also monitor local measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine coverage and maintain vaccination access.”

Measles is not just a concern for children. Adults who are unsure of their immunity status should speak with their healthcare provider about whether immunity testing (titers) or MMR vaccination is appropriate.

Should a suspected case or exposure occur in Sullivan County, Public Health stands ready to immediately investigate, conduct contact tracing, coordinate testing, provide treatment and vaccinations, and notify the community.

“Public health emergency preparedness is intentionally integrated across our programs rather than operating as a stand-alone function,” adds Dr. Moore. “This allows epidemiology, nursing, clinical services, outreach, communications, and leadership to respond collectively and immediately based on the needs of an event, with continued coordination and guidance from the NYS Department of Health.”

Hatzalah EMS organized a Rural EMS Legislative Tour this past week. They invited several upstate and downstate Assembly and Senate members, including our own Paula Kay and Peter Oberacker. Eric Ball from Congressman Josh Riley's office attended as well. District 6 County Legislator (and Public Safety Committee Chair) Luis Alvarez attended, as did Deputy Public Safety Commissioner for EMS Alex Rau. The tour began at Rock Hill ambulance station to see firsthand the challenges facing rural EMS, followed by a town hall session at the County's Emergency Services Training Center. Several EMS captains and leaders participated, as well.

The Legislature on Thursday recognized the exceptional emergency responders who had been honored at the Bureau of EMS BBQ the previous weekend: Emily Poley (Neversink FD), Tony Carlucci (who was working that day but serves with the Bethel Volunteer Ambulance Corps), Upper Delaware Ambulance Corps (represented by the Duffy family), Ralph Bressler (Livingston Manor Ambulance Corps) and Tammy Reed (SeniorCare). Presenting the awards were District 6 Legislator Luis Alvarez (chair of the Public Safety Committee) and Deputy Public Safety Commissioner/EMS Coordinator Alex Rau. Each of these people and groups has also been nominated for State-level awards for serving their communities and keeping us safe and healthy!
