While rodent-borne diseases are very rare in New York, it’s still important to take precautions when cleaning areas where rodents may have been present. The biggest risk comes from stirring dust and particles into the air — which is why you should never “dry clean” rodent droppings, urine, or nesting materials.

“Dry cleaning” means sweeping, vacuuming, or brushing up materials before they’ve been thoroughly wetted down. These actions can release contaminated particles into the air where they may be inhaled. Instead, fully soak the area first and clean carefully using gloves and a mask.

Use a general-purpose household disinfectant and make sure the label specifically says “disinfectant.” You can also make a fresh bleach solution by mixing 1.5 cups of household bleach with 1 gallon of water (or 1 part bleach to 9 parts water). Always prepare bleach solutions fresh before use.

Public Works Committee Chair Joe Perrello is pleased to announce that Sullivan County is hosting a residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event in June.

Scheduled for Sunday, June 14, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., it will be offered at the Monticello Transfer Station at 91 Landfill Drive.

“This is a great time to clean out your household chemicals,” said Perrello. “These items can be dangerous to people and the environment if stored a long time or just thrown out with the rest of the trash.”

The program is open to individuals with residences in Sullivan County ONLY – photo ID or other proof of residency will be required. There is no charge, and pre-registration is not required.

This event is intended to collect and properly manage residentially-generated hazardous household materials like herbicides, pesticides, mercury-containing items, cleaning products, pool chemicals, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs, paints, solvents, acids, bases, automotive batteries, antifreeze and preservatives, just to name a few. Please note that tires, refrigerators, electronics, ammunition, radioactive material and medical waste will not be accepted at this event.

A second collection event will be held on September 20 at the same time and location. For any questions, contact Recycling Coordinator Kassie Thelman at 845-807-0291 or [email protected].

Skip the Slip: Preventing Receipt Contamination♻️📃

Did you know that not all paper is recyclable? Receipts are one of those paper items that do not belong in your recycling bin! This is because most receipts are made with thermal paper containing chemical compounds that affect their ability to be made into new products. The best way to dispose of receipts is in the trash, but if you’re able to, next time skip the slip and ask for a digital receipt. E-receipts cause less waste and allow easy access for future needs.
