If you’re a parent, student, or faculty member at Monticello Elementary, you may notice someone new around the school.

Officer Mike Neal will be posted at Monticello Elementary for the time being to help ensure the safety and security of all our students and school staff.

We would like to commend the Wayne County School Officials and Mayor Kenny Catron for entrusting the Monticello Police Department with this important responsibility. We’re proud to work alongside our school and community leaders to help keep our kids and schools safe.

We’ve also warned Officer Neal that working at an elementary school comes with some serious responsibilities: breaking up arguments over who gets to be line leader, investigating suspicious amounts of glitter, and determining who actually started the “he touched me first” incident.

And Mike… good luck trying to convince a room full of elementary schoolers that “I’m not telling you what happened” is an acceptable answer during your investigations. We have a feeling these witnesses are going to be VERY cooperative.

All jokes aside, Officer Neal is looking forward to being a familiar and friendly face around the school and building relationships with our students, faculty, and parents.

SCHOOL IS BACK — LET’S KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE!

School traffic is back, which means it’s time for everyone to remember a few simple driving tips.

SLOW DOWN IN SCHOOL ZONES.
The speed limit isn’t a suggestion, and your car doesn’t get bonus points for making it to the drop-off line first.

STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is out.
That big red stop sign really does mean STOP. It’s not just there for decoration.

PUT THE PHONE DOWN.
That text can wait. Your kids are more important than knowing who just liked your Facebook post.

WATCH FOR CHILDREN.
Kids can appear out of nowhere faster than a police officer can finish a cup of coffee. Keep your eyes up and be prepared to stop.

FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS OF SCHOOL STAFF.
School staff will be present to help keep traffic moving and, most importantly, keep our students safe. Please be patient and follow their directions.

BE PATIENT IN THE DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP LINES.
We know everyone has somewhere to be. But unfortunately, the school parking lot does not have a fast lane.

STAY ALERT.
Watch for students walking near vehicles, cars pulling in and out, and unexpected stops.

Remember: A few extra minutes on your commute is a small price to pay for getting everyone where they need to go safely.

SLOW DOWN. STAY ALERT. PUT THE PHONE AWAY. WATCH FOR KIDS.

Because the only thing we want getting “hit” this school year is the snooze button!

7-21-2026 – James Kendrick was arrested and charged with Alcohol Intoxication, Criminal Littering, and Drinking Alcohol in a Public Place by Officer Smedley, with assistance from K-9 Officer Bertram.

7-23-2026 – Jeremy Foster was arrested and charged with Alcohol Intoxication and Disorderly Conduct 2nd Degree by Officer Neal.

7-26-2026 – Tammy Carrender was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication by Officer Thompson. Carrender was also served with a Wayne County Indictment Warrant for Theft of Identity by Officer Guffey.

7-27-2026 – Harold McGarry was arrested and served with a Probation Violation Warrant. During the arrest, McGarry was additionally charged with Possession of Ma*****na, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of a Controlled Substance 1st Degree (Methamphetamine) by Officer Thomas, with assistance from Officer Smedley and Officer Thompson.

CHANGES TO KENTUCKY’S FLEEING & EVADING LAW

The Monticello Police Department wants to make the public—especially young drivers and young adults—aware of significant changes to Kentucky’s Fleeing & Evading law.

Unfortunately, more drivers across Kentucky are choosing to flee from law enforcement during traffic stops. As a result, the penalties have become much more severe.

Fleeing or Evading Police – 1st Degree

➡️ Increased from a Class D Felony to a Class C Felony
➡️ Punishable by 5–10 years in prison

Fleeing or Evading Police – 2nd Degree

➡️ Increased from a Class A Misdemeanor to a Class D Felony
➡️ Punishable by 1–5 years in prison

If you are convicted of either offense:
• You must serve at least 50% of your sentence before becoming eligible for probation or parole.
• Probation and diversion are not available.
• A conviction means you are going to prison.

Many of the people committing these offenses are young adults with little or no criminal history. One bad decision can permanently change your future with a felony conviction, prison time, and consequences that follow you for the rest of your life.

More importantly, fleeing puts everyone in danger—including law enforcement officers, innocent motorists, passengers, pedestrians, and yourself.

The solution is simple: If you see emergency lights behind you, safely pull over. Follow the officer’s instructions and handle any concerns through the legal process afterward.

Remember…

Our patrol cars may look fast, but the paperwork is even faster.

And unlike a speeding ticket, a felony isn’t something you can just pay online and forget about.

Do yourself—and everyone else—a favor.

Pull over. Stay safe. Don’t turn a traffic stop into a prison sentence.
