We are your ambulance service, SJCEMS.

Every year, we respond to approximately 600 calls, serving your neighbors, family, and visitors. We take pride in serving San Juan County.

However, we are facing challenges in securing funding.

As the new school year begins tomorrow, the Sheriff's Office reminds everyone to adhere to designated drop-off zones at all schools. Our main priority is the safety of our children. Failure to follow these rules, regardless of how rushed you may be, endangers everyone. Please be smart and attentive.

Additionally, we urge all teenage drivers to wear their seatbelts and remain focused on the road and their surroundings.

We wish everyone a safe and happy school year.

BABYLON FIRE – THE FIRE REMAINS AN ACTIVE INCIDENT

While recent rainfall has been a welcome help, the Babylon Fire remains an active wildfire. We understand that many people no longer see large columns of smoke or flames, but that does not mean the fire is out.

Wildfires of this size can continue to burn beneath the surface, smolder in heavy fuels, and produce hot spots that may not be visible from nearby communities. Even after rain, changing weather conditions, wind, or drying vegetation can cause these areas to become active again.

It is also important to understand what containment means. A fire that is reported as contained is not extinguished. Containment means firefighters have established control lines around the fire and are continually monitoring and strengthening those lines. Crews remain ready to respond immediately if any hot spots flare up or conditions change.

The recent transition of evacuation areas from SET to READY reflects the hard work of firefighters and the careful evaluation of incident managers, local officials, and cooperating agencies. It is a positive step forward—but it does not mean the incident is over.

We ask everyone to continue respecting closures, following restrictions, and remaining aware of current conditions. These measures are in place to protect both the public and the firefighters who continue working around the clock to secure the fire.

We appreciate the patience, cooperation, and support shown by our communities throughout this incident. As always, any important updates will be communicated as quickly as possible through our official channels.

We want to reassure everyone that there are NO evacuation orders in place at this time. Our goal is not to cause panic, but to encourage everyone to be prepared should conditions change.

Wildfires can change rapidly, especially during periods of extreme drought, high winds, and Red Flag conditions. Taking a few simple steps now can help you and your family respond quickly and safely if an evacuation ever becomes necessary.

BE READY
Prepare a go bag with medications, important documents, clothing, pet supplies, and other essentials. Make a family communication plan and keep your vehicle fueled.

BE SET
Stay informed by following official San Juan County updates. If conditions worsen and an evacuation warning is issued, be ready to leave with little notice.

GO NOW
If an evacuation order is issued, leave immediately. Evacuation orders are issued to protect lives. Leaving promptly helps keep you, your family, and first responders safe.

Preparedness is not panic—it is being proactive. We hope we never have to ask anyone to evacuate, but if that time comes, we want every resident to be ready to act safely and confidently.
