As the 52nd Atwood Music Festival has officially come to an end, our agency would like to thank the many individuals and organizations who provided support and assistance throughout the weekend. Thanks to Mayor Justin Mullins, the Atwood Music Festival Committee, Bobby Joe Herring (Public Works), Janus Herring (Parks and Recreation), the Monticello Fire Department, the Mississippi Department of Corrections, Mississippi Beverage Control, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, and Lifeguard Ambulance Service for their continued support.

A special thank you also goes to Sheriff Ryan Everett for the assistance and support he and his deputies provided during the event.

Over the course of the weekend, festival-related calls for service included one disturbance, two motor vehicle accidents, and one general complaint.

I would also like to thank everyone who attended the festival for helping look out for one another and contributing to a safe and enjoyable weekend.

‼️ Official Statement ~ 7 April 2026 ‼️

On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at approximately 8:48 A.M. the Monticello Police Department, along with the Lawrence County School District Police Department, responded to Monticello Elementary School following reports of a gunshot in the area of the campus.

With assistance from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, officers conducted a search of the area and found no active threats. The school was placed on lockdown as a precaution but has since been cleared and has resumed normal operations.

I will be working alongside Chief Joe Bullock and his officers throughout the day to ensure additional security measures and resources are in place.

The safety of our children remains our highest priority.

Being Monticello’s Police Chief isn’t just about the job—it’s about being part of the community. From Easter egg hunts to wiener dog races, I love sharing these moments with my neighbors. Proud to serve, proud to lead, proud to call this town home.

P.S. I also got to take a picture with the Easter Bunny!
